What are the responsibilities and job description for the MRI Safety Officer - Day Shift position at University of Iowa Health Care Health System?
The University of Iowa Health Care department of Radiology is seeking an MRI Safety Officer, who works primarily Day Shift, to oversee the MRI safety Practices and provide education to staff across all MRI departments in the UI Health Care.
Duties Include
Provide Specialty Patient Care:
- Assist MR procedures in a safe and proficient manner consistent with hospital/department policies or standards of care.
- Communicate in a positive manner with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
Provide Education:
- Ensuring that adequate written safety procedures, emergency procedures, and operating instructions are issued, in consultation with the MRMD and MRSE, as needed.
- Development, documentation, and execution, in conjunction with and under the authority of the MRMD, of safe working procedures for the MR environment.
- Ensuring, in cooperation with the MRMD, that medical, technical, nursing, emergency, and all other relevant staff groups (including ancillary workers) who may be exposed to the MR environment are educated appropriately and updated as necessary as to MR safety requirements.
Collaborate/Communicate with Health Care Team:
- Communicates in a positive manner with physicians, staff enterprise wide on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient MRI safety operations for all MRI departments system wide.
- Works with Clinical managers to facilitate education in MRI safety.
- Engages staff to meet departmental or institutional goals. Communicates with staff in a positive manner to
- support initiatives and encourage staff participation.
- Maintaining regular contact with other relevant groups or committees responsible for the safety and welfare of personnel on-site.
Safe Delivery of Care and Compliance
- Identifies opportunities for improvement in quality and patient experience and recommends solutions.
- Ensuring that policies and procedures of the MRMD are implemented and followed.
- Providing expertise in root cause analyses, solutions meetings, etc., related to MR adverse events.
- Ensuring that there is a clear policy for purchasing, testing, and clearly marking of all equipment that will be taken into Zones III and IV.
- Providing safety advice on the modification of MR protocols (in cooperation with the MRMD and/or MRSE) if/as needed
HR Management:
- Assists with orientation and onboarding of new staff within the clinical area.

Education Required
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Successful completion of approved program by Joint Review Committee in Radiologic Technology Education is required.
- Certification in diagnostic procedures by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologies is required.
- Certification in MR by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologies is required.
- Will need to be board certified MRSO (MRSC) within one year of hire.
Certifications Required
- Successful completion of approved program by Joint Review Committee in Radiologic Technology Education is required.
- Certification or eligibility for certification in diagnostic procedures by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologies is required.
- Certification in MR by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologies is required.
Experience Requirements
- 3-5 years current experience in MR Radiology.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Current experience in a Level 1 trauma center in MR.
- MRSO (MRSC) Certification
