University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a 100% Nursing Practice Leader to assist with various nursing initiatives and processes within Perioperative Nursing.

Position Specific Summary: The Nursing Practice Leader for the Perioperative Nursing Division provides leadership in clinical care coordination/specialized nursing care, clinical education of nursing staff and health professionals, or use clinical nursing expertise in improving nursing and health care through the management of staff education and development.

Leadership and Direct Care:
  • Lead changes in nursing care based on evaluation and research.
  • Ensure staff competency in perioperative nursing; may provide specialized care.
  • Maintain and update equipment and supplies.
  • Nursing research experience.
Specialized Services:
  • Incorporate research findings into clinical practice.
  • Develop and implement point-of-care documentation technologies.
Education:
  • Provide in-depth knowledge to healthcare members, patients, students, and residents.
  • Communicate complex medical information to various audiences.
Compliance:
  • Utilize advanced compliance knowledge.
  • Assist in developing procedures and Quality Assurance plans.
Human Resources Management:
  • Supervise care delivery of clinicians and students/residents, providing feedback.
  • May hire, develop, and manage staff performance, ensuring policy compliance.
Care Coordination:
  • Integrate multidisciplinary treatments for optimal patient care.
  • Mentor patients and families, oversee care coordination, update care plans, track patient status, reduce unneeded services.
Clinical Competency Training and Development:
  • Develop clinical skills of students, residents, and staff.
  • Oversee training programs, consult on competency plans, design learning programs, mentor on closing skill gaps.
Clinical Performance Improvement:
  • Influence factors contributing to quality patient care.
  • Evaluate treatments, recommend improvements, share performance data, train on policies, guide treatment selection.
Clinical Policies and Standards:
  • Definition: Uses industry standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Proficiency Level: Extensive
  • Typical Behaviors: Ensures compliance, documents standards, collaborates on joint standards, develops clinical policies.

Percent of Time: 10 0% - 40 hours per week
Schedule: Primarily Monday-Friday between the hours of 07-1700. May require some flex of hours due to unit education requirements. Weekend or holiday only if staffing required. Administrative call 2-3 times per week for 7 days each occurrence.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Nursing required.
    • If Master's/Doctorate Degree is in related field other than nursing specialty, a Baccalaureate of Science or Arts Degree in Nursing is required
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required
  • 3 years of clinical nursing experience including a minimum of 1 year in a clinical leadership role in a similar setting.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Member/involvement in professional organizations​​​​​​
  • Professional certification in relevant nursing or clinical area is highly desired
