department of Finance and Accounting Services is seeking a SeniorFinancial Analyst to help support the accounting and financial reporting demands of Iowa Health Care including, but not limited to, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), Carver College of Medicine (CCOM), and University of Iowa Physicians (UIP). The analyst will report to the Manager, Accounting & Financial Operations, CCOM, the senior analyst helps support and oversee the preparation of journal entries, supporting work papers, and reconciliations for key financial processes, variance analyses for financial statements, and key performance indicators. The senior analyst will also be a key member of the team who helps the manager provide technical assistance, training, and education to internal stakeholders regarding accounting processes, financial statement interpretation, and financial reporting applications. A significant portion of the senior financial analyst's primary duties will be focused on the enterprise's professional-based revenue, CCOM commitments, and the day-to-day financial operations of CCOM.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location .

Position Responsibilities:

Provide financial oversight for accounting functions for multiple reporting entities of UI Health Care with minimal supervision from the Accounting & Financial Operations Manager, Carver College of Medicine . Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Timely and accurate preparation of various monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements

  • Performing monthly reconciliations for system-wide asset and liability balances

  • Analyzing actual versus budget variances and summarizing key takeaways for professional-based revenues of the enterprise, including gross and net patient revenue, Medicaid Directed Payments, wRVUs, and net payments per wRVU

  • Serving as an expert in professional-based revenue cycle processes, including integration between Epic-related infrastructure, such as bill areas, to the general ledger to integrate new clinical operations into the enterprise.

  • Maintaining the CCOM commitment database and collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure balances are accounted for properly.

  • Coordinating monthly and year-end accounting close processes, including collaborating with internal stakeholders to prepare journal entries.

  • Gathering and manipulating raw data from multiple sources for ad-hoc analyses

  • Assisting with analysis, interpretation, and implementation of accounting processes to comply with relevant Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements and other authoritative sources of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

  • Providing guidance to end users of financial reporting applications as well as accounting policies and procedures.

  • Assisting with the development and testing of new general ledger and financial reporting tools

  • Assisting auditors from Auditor of State and external CPA firms with annual financial statement audits

  • Fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams across the organization

  • Contributing new ideas and seeking ways to improve existing processes.

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent amount of education and experience

  • 3 years of accounting, auditing, and/or financial analysis experience

  • Self-motivated with a passion for continuous learning and desire to take on tough and challenging projects.

  • Superb time management skills and the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to perform complex financial analyses.

  • Demonstrated ability to filter through ambiguity while executing on the details of tasks under tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in conjunction with cross-functional teams.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to think critically and creatively when working with data.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft software applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.

Desired

  • Certified Public Accountant license

  • Master's degree in Business Administration or Accounting

  • Experience in health care accounting. Preference given to a background in an academic setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to transform data into useful information tailored to leadership needs through storytelling and data visualization.

  • Experience with relational databases, structured query language (SQL), Tableau, PowerBI

  • Experience in identifying opportunities for operational improvement, and using creative efforts to bring about solutions.

  • Ability to work effectively in ambiguous and complex situations.

  • Knowledge of University of Iowa accounting principles, internal controls, and information systems
