Description

The College of Engineering is looking to add an Assistant Director of Academic Support to their team. As a member of the Engineering Student Success Team (eSST), the Assistant Director of Academic Support oversees academic support programs and initiatives including management of the Engineering Tutoring program, administration of the Engineering Honors program, and coordination of the Student Success Workshop Series. Responsibilities will require occasional weekend / evening (Sunday-Thursday) work hours to support the tutoring program and other student activities and events. This position is responsible for advising undergraduate engineering students, individually and in groups, at student orientation and throughout the academic year.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks

  • Manage the undergraduate evening tutoring program, including recruitment and supervision of Engineering Tutor staff (lead tutors, tutors, and receptionists) and management of the program budget.
  • Administer the College of Engineering Honors Program and collaborate with the University Honors Program to increase the number of engineering undergraduates participating in all aspects of Honors programming.
  • Coordinate and promote the academic and developmental skills (Student Success) workshop series offered each semester.
  • Serve as primary academic advisor for a select population of first-year students.
  • Advise students regarding departmental, collegiate, and University policies and procedures; programs of study; and the development of appropriate academic plans.
  • Assist the director of academic advising with updating and preparing orientation and advising resources and communications for first-year students.
  • Meet with students, individually and in groups, during summer / winter orientation programs for first-year students.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with assigned program faculty and staff to understand and clarify departmental expectations, maintain current knowledge of degree programs, curriculum changes and requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Student Success Team (eSST) staff and members of the campus community in planning and implementing retention programs for students.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise Engineering Tutoring staff (lead tutors, tutors, and receptionists).
  • Assess academic support programs (Engineering Tutoring, Engineering Honors, and Student Success Workshops) and recommend services based on needs of the student population.

Qualifications

Education Requirement

  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience (either professional level or experience during graduate school) in a student services role supporting undergraduate success such as academic advising, academic support and retention, residence life, admission counseling, career advising, student life or similar.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills : strong professional writing, public speaking, interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated success working in a team environment.
  • Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends during the academic year.
  • Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student development or related area.
  • Academic advising experience.
  • Student supervisory experience.
  • Experience with managing academic support resources.
  • Professional experience and / or a degree in a STEM discipline.
  • Ability to be self-directed, organized, and proactive in completing work assignments.
