BASIC FUNCTION

Provide support for research by conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing results and performing operational duties associated with the laboratory (bench and field), animal or human research. Key areas of responsibilities include conducting research activities / experiments, collecting, analyzing and summarizing data, preparing reports, contributing to manuscripts / publications, administrative and project management, facilities and equipment management, and supervision / staffing.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Research :

Research in the Wendt lab focuses on understanding and targeting metastatic breast cancer ( wendtlab.com ). We use a combination of the molecular, cell, and whole animal techniques to model advanced stage disease. As a PRK3 in the Wendt lab you would be expected to function as a specialist / technical expert in either molecular biology, pharmacology, bioinformatics, or murine models of cancer. Some level of critical analysis of current literature to develop novel approaches in conjunction with the principal investigator we also be expected.

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations :

  • Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assure fidelity to protocols, may propose modifications to protocols and / or assist in the design of experiment protocols.
  • Design portions of experimental plan.
  • Monitor, test and evaluate current procedures.
  • Identify and adhere to Quality Assurance practices to maintain validity and integrity of research data.
  • Apply new methods / theories.
  • Conduct wet lab research experiments.
  • Construct, organize and distribute reagents associated with breast cancer patient research in conjunction with Pathology and BioMER team members.

Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications :

  • May perform statistical analysis of data and qualitative analysis.
  • Assist in the design of manuals, questionnaires, and forms.
  • Assist in preparing publications and presentations.
  • May contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition.
  • Present results / finds at team and departmental meetings; may present at local and national meetings.
  • Administrative and Project Management :

  • Make recommendations regarding the validity of research subjects and data.
  • Submit routine IRB, ACURF or similar protocol submissions, if applicable.
  • Responsible for safety programs by following guidelines and maintaining required documentation in support of safety programs.
  • Facilities and Equipment Management :

  • Coordinate and manage equipment and facilities.
  • Monitor environmental risks and quality control.
  • Test new equipment and troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment failures and repairs.
  • Coordinate software licenses as necessary to complete projects.
  • Supervision / Staffing :

  • Provide ongoing training on basic and new lab techniques and protocols for employees.
  • Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to track progress and assure outcomes are achieved.
  • May participate in hiring staff and managing the performance of staff to assure staff to assure staff is compliant with UI policies and procedures.
  • Qualifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • 1 year of experience is required.
  • DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous laboratory experience with some level of molecular biology, cell biology, pharmacology, or whole animal techniques is desirable. Alternatively, some level of experience in bioinformatics and large data analysis is desirable.
  • An overall interest in managing a lab, working with students, and working with the PI to execute existing projects and initiate new research directions.
