The RA is expected to bring expertise in biology and biological research techniques to ongoing interdisciplinary, translational research projects including: infection, drug delivery, and biomaterials compatibility.

The OREC is an interdisciplinary research and education center composed of medical, engineering, and scientific professionals. We need an experienced researcher with a biology background to help us conduct quality research. This position provides support for both faculty and student research. The environment is collegial and supportive but requires independence and initiative.
Ongoing research is focused on the bacterial attachment and biofilm formation of orthopedic relevant bacteria on biomaterials used in surgery, the development of improved antimicrobial biomaterials, and the reduction in surgical infections through improved and alternate antimicrobial methods. These projects include both in vitro and in vivo models. We are looking for novel ways to decrease the infection that can occur around orthopedic implants.
Duties include: Plan and conduct experiments, interpret data, write manuscripts. Maintain lab records and data. Maintain biology lab facilities and equipment in an organized and efficient way. Serve as a knowledgeable resource for all biology related research in the lab including lab techniques, cell lines, staining, and microscopy. Train less experienced students and staff. Work with and help care for animals used for research as needed. Perform other duties as may be assigned by supervisor. Be willing to participate in and support all research activities, even those outside the scope of biology, as needed. This includes assisting with the collection of fresh and embalmed human cadaveric materials used for research and education. Maintain lab and related equipment.
** Required Qualifications **
Bachelors of Science in Biology or related field. Candidates must have training or background in laboratory research techniques including working in a sterile hood, sterile pipetting, cell culture, microscopy, and some histology. Candidate must be technically skilled allowing them to maintain and service lab equipment as well as operate the equipment. Candidate expected to work with and support the research efforts of engineers, graduate students, medical students, orthopedic residents and orthopedic faculty. Must be willing to work with human cadaveric material and animals, when needed. Experience with data collection/analysis required. Candidate must be able to independently develop or adapt protocols and assays based on information available in publications and from other scientific sources. Must be able to function independently. Candidate must have the ability to communicate and collaborate with all lab personnel and bring a positive attitude and strong work ethic to the lab.
** Preferred Qualifications **
MS in related scientific or bioengineering field. Experience with human and animal cell lines, hard and soft tissue histology techniques, lab management and maintenance. Experience with bacteriology and related techniques. Experience working with animal models. Experience with fluorescent microscopy and various staining techniques including immunohistochemistry. Experience with FTIR, electron microscopy, micro CT, confocal microscope or other imaging techniques is a plus. Experience with PCR, Electrophoresis, Western Blot, and Elisa could be useful. Experience with drug delivery and drug delivery models would be helpful.
