Job Description Summary:
The Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Department seeks a full-time Research Assistant (RA) to work closely with various clinical staff members and researchers at the University of Kansas (KU) Hospital and KU Medical Center (KUMC) to assist in the successful development and completion of clinical research studies. The Research Assistant will assist Research Coordinators, as assigned, to perform data collection, research documentation, publication development and subject enrollment. The position will primarily support the Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Spine Surgeons and associated Research Coordinators but may expand to include other Orthopedic service lines if indicated.
Job Description:
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Work with Surgeons, Research Instructor, Department Chair, Department Administrator, Research Supervisor, CIRO, and Director of Orthopedic Research to assist with research coordination which includes data collection, consenting, forms and entering data for various departmental research activities.

Review of necessary research documents, such as protocols, data collection forms, Institutional Review Board (IRB) documentation, abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts preparation.

Administration of clinical research trials by ensuring completion of numerous research activities, including participant enrollment and data collection and chart review.

Maintenance and completion of research documentation, including electronic medical records, participant files, case report forms, databases, and study binders following standard operating procedures (SOPs) for department and research.

Assuring compliance with all relevant IRB and other regulatory agency requirements. Maintaining HIPAA compliance per KU Hospital and KUMC institutional policies.

Participation if directed in specimen collection, specimen handling, processing and shipping.
- Recording participant testing results.
This position is dependent on surgeon clinic and surgical schedules but may allow for schedule flexibility.
Other study-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in a basic science or health-related field. Relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-by-year basis.
Work Experience

Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

Experience giving presentations.
- Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications
Education
- Masters of Science in related scientific field.
Work Experience
-
One (1) year of experience with research or within the healthcare field.

Data management experience with Microsoft Excel, REDCap, CRIS, VELOS, Access, or other electronic data capture systems.

Experience with electronic medical records and working knowledge of medical terminology.

Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians and administrative staff.

Experience in clinical trial development, data capture and maintenance, and patient consenting.

Experience in drafting and submitting papers for publication to an academic journal.
- Experience with all applicable source citing rules, dependent on various journal requirements.

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
