Job Description Summary
The Department of Cancer Biology at KUMC is seeking a highly motivated Research Technician to join the laboratories of Dr. Kalyani Pyaram and Dr. Danny Welch with responsibilities split evenly between both. The research in these labs work on understanding the cell and molecular biology of cancers and immune cells using animal models. Key duties include maintaining mouse colonies, performing genetic screening, ordering supplies, managing general laboratory operations, and conducting research. The position will work collaboratively with a diverse team, including undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral trainees.

At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.

Job Description
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of PI and other research staff, conducts routine elements of research work that requires the use of skills, technical and academic knowledge to follow established procedures, and record results as well as maintenance of laboratory.
- Maintain a current Laboratory Notebook, documenting all calculations, work, experiments, and other pertinent research information.
- Participates in maintaining day-to-day laboratory operation and general laboratory maintenance that includes ordering supplies, cleanup, routine animal maintenance, and maintenance of equipment.
- Maintenance of mouse colonies and/or other animals for research purposes, requires willingness to work with animals.
- Perform research with a diverse research group, encompassing undergraduate/graduate trainees and research staff.
- Participate in regular communication with the PIs via lab meetings and personal meetings, so excellent interpersonal, team and organizational skills
- Follow established quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures, including appropriate documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by direct supervisor and other research staff.
- Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Cancer Biology Department, understand and follow IACUC, animal, and biosafety protocols, and attend regular lab meetings.
- Education
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry or a related field.
- Experience:
- Research experience and willingness to work with animals in handle mice.
- Experience with cell culture and sterile technique
- Prior experience as a research technician or lab manager
- Familiarity with standard molecular biology techniques and/or immunological methods
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
