***THIS IS A POOL POSITION TO HIRE MULTIPLE COMPLEX DIRECTORS FOR KU STUDENT HOUSING***

The Complex Director (CD) is part of the Residence Life team in KU Student Housing and responsible for the daily operations and management of a residential area housing of 500-800 students. The Complex Director supervises one to six residential graduate assistants (Assistant Complex Directors), 8-24 undergraduate staff members (Resident Assistants, Food Board Managers, Proctors), and indirectly supervises front desk assistants.

Additional duties include community development, student development and retention, staff development, student conduct, crisis intervention, student engagement and leadership, budget management, creating a strong sense of community through the implementation of the residential curriculum, hall government advisement, and summer support.

The CD has a foundational role in supporting residential community members in realizing their full potential as individuals, members of the KU community, and members of society as a whole. The CD works to provide an engaging community that increase awareness and advocacy, self-responsibility, interdependence and continued knowledge building.

The CD is supervised by an Assistant Director of Residence Life and serves in an on-call duty rotation, as the crisis management contact for a the on-campus residential population. is home to nearly 5100 students on the Lawrence campus in nine residence halls, three on-campus apartment complexes, and twelve scholarship halls. Complexes vary in physical size, student population, and programmatic emphasis. This is a full-time, 12-month live-in staff position.

Job Description
Supervision 30%
  • Supervise graduate assistant staff members including their recruitment, selection, training, and development while guiding their supervision of undergraduate staff.
  • Supervise undergraduate student staff, as needed.
  • Ensure staff understands and implements departmental and university mission/vision.
  • Maintain regular staff and individual meetings with direct reports and complex team, including frequent formal and informal communication with staff regarding their responsibilities, personal well-being, and academic success.
  • Support and recognize individual and group achievements.
Student Learning, Inclusion & Advocacy 25%
  • Implement departmental residential curriculum focused on academic success, engaged civility, health & wellness, and self & relational management.
  • Develop communities by using Baxter Magolda's theory of self-authorship with an emphasis on creating learning partnerships with residents.
  • Foster an environment, educate, and train staff that promotes and supports inclusion and social justice.
  • Promote positive interactions and decisions which affirm individual responsibility and demonstrate respect for others, personal boundaries, and university property.
  • Actively engage in the evolution of the community climate, develop plans that foster inclusion and acceptance of students, and engage the community through dialogues and events to establish shared expectations and standards of living that uplift all students.
  • Advise student groups (Hall Programming Boards, All Scholarship Hall Council, etc.)
  • Maintain relationships with university support services and oversee the referral of students to university resources.
Student Conduct, Support & Crisis Intervention - 25%
  • Serve as a university student conduct hearing officer and primary case manager for complex/building conduct; ensure that graduate students adjudicate student conduct with a student learning approach.
  • Oversee and manage the documentation and referrals from incidents involving students utilizing Maxient software.
  • Follow up with and provide aftercare support to staff and students regarding their involvement in incidents.
  • Intervene and make referrals as appropriate to individual and/or group concerns in a timely manner.
  • Respond to bias-related incidents; support the department's commitment to creating safe and inclusive communities.
  • Participate in rotating on-call duty coverage for assigned coverage area.
Administration & Building Management - 20%
  • Work collaboratively with the central occupancy management staff to oversee and manage building occupancy and front desk functions, including supervision of desk assistants.
  • Oversee complex budgets for programming and student personnel.
  • Conduct facilities walkthroughs and report ongoing facilities and safety/security concerns.
  • Facilitate all building opening and closing procedures.
  • Support management and organization of summer operations for camps, conferences, and summer school including supervision of staff.
  • Serve on departmental committees including recruitment (full-time, graduate, and undergraduate), staff Education (training), residential curriculum, policies and procedures, inclusion and social justice initiatives and large-scale events.
  • Serve as a representative of KU Student Housing, Student Affairs, and the university.
  • Participate in professional development initiatives
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
  1. This position requires working on-site.
  2. Some evening and weekend work required with on-call responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
  1. Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs or related field and conferred by date of appointment.
  2. At least one (1) year of experience in residence life administration or related field.
  3. Experience supervising staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with development and/or implementation of student learning initiatives including residential curriculum, learning communities, or teaching.
  2. Experience managing student conduct programs including hearing officer experience.
  3. Experience working with crisis response and management.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by application materials and interview process.
