Position Overview

This position will coordinate the Haskell/KU Exchange Program and provide culturally relevant and personalized student service support to Native American students designed to foster academic success and belonging. The Haskell/KU Exchange Program Coordinator provides culturally relevant academic and enrollment support services to students including academic program information, financial guidance, enrollment procedures and policies support and orientation content relevant to the Haskell – to- KU transition. The Coordinator will also work with the KU Office of Admissions and Scholarships to support recruitment and access for Native American students and meet with prospective Native American students and their families. This position assists students with navigating campus and identifying campus resources and opportunities in conjunction with other professional staff within Equity and Success Initiatives. This position reports to the Director of Equity & Success Initiatives.

The Equity and Success Initiatives team includes Hawk Link, Hawk Link Peer Mentoring, Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP), Native American Initiatives (NAI), Jayhawk JumpStart, Haskell/KU Exchange Program, and the KC Scholars, Hispanic Development Fund Scholars, and Larsen Scholars.

Equity and Success Initiatives is part of the Student Success Initiatives department within Academic Success at KU along with Student Success Technology, the Military-Affiliated Student Center, and Academic Success Navigators.

Academic Success Overview:

Academic Success advocates for and strategically advances education at the University of Kansas. We walk with students from orientation to graduation, providing them with high-quality, data-driven academic and career advising, targeted academic support systems and networks, and empowering and engaging experiential learning. We serve the university, coordinating with faculty, staff, and students throughout KU to further educational initiatives and strategic goals. Our units include University Academic Support Centers, Centers for Orientation and Academic Advising Programs, Career and Experiential Learning and Student Success Initiatives.

Job Description

Student Enrollment Services 50%
  • Coordinate the Haskell/KU Exchange Program including assisting students with enrolling in courses at KU and Haskell.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support and refer students as necessary.
  • Assist Haskell students during the transfer process.
  • Orient Exchange students to the program and to KU in collaboration with the Orientation and Transitions Program team.
  • Assist in orienting KU students to Haskell Indian Nations University as appropriate.
  • Meet regularly with students for academic and personal success coaching/consultation and resource referral.
  • Develop academic success plans with students that include development of personal and academic goals in partnership with the student’s assigned KU advisor.
  • Connect students directly to critical student services including study strategies, time management and organization, critical thinking, test preparation, note taking skills, self-monitoring skills and other academic supports.
  • Develop rapport and productive relationships with students by creating a community of care with a welcoming environment for students to grow and thrive.
Program Coordination and Collaboration 40%
  • Develop and coordinate a program plan that includes marketing, recruitment, and communication for this student population in collaboration with KU Admissions.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admissions and Scholarships in the recruitment and access of American Indian students and provide outreach to prospective American Indian students and their families regarding KU and support programs available on campus.’
  • Coordinate course listings with the KU Registrar’s office.
  • Serve as KU Primary Contact for the Exchange MOA and program liaison with Haskell Indian Nations University.
  • Collaborate with Equity and Success Initiatives Team, the Academic Success units and campus partners on creating engaging social and academic programs designed to holistically support student involvement and engagement.
Other Duties as assigned by Academic Success Leadership 10%
  • Serve as ad hoc member of The Collaborative.
  • Attend relevant staff meetings and trainings related to Academic Success Initiatives.
  • Use University-approved systems for all student records and adhere to Academic Success technology use standards and FERPA guidelines.
  • May supervise student staff.
  • Serve on departmental and campus committees as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by Academic Success Leadership.

Position Requirements

  • Travel to and from the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University, along with recruitment travel to relevant college and career fairs as deemed necessary.
  • This position requires working on-site.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree OR bachelor’s degree PLUS three (3) years related experience in higher education.
  • One (1) year of experience working with First Nations/Native American/American Indian and Alaska Native students with demonstrated high levels of cultural competency as demonstrated by cover letter and resume.
  • One (1) year of experience in student admissions or recruitment at an institution of higher education.
  • One (1) year of experience in student support services at an institution of higher education including academic advising, student services, or academic support services.
  • Excellent written communications skills as demonstrated by cover letter and resume.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in education, counseling, psychology, special education, social work, liberal arts, Indigenous studies, or related field.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with key campus stakeholders.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Experience working with Tribal communities - demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of American Indian students.
  • Academic Coaching Certification in higher education administration, student personnel or related field (CRLA/ATP/NCLA).
  • Experience using the Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience with web-based retention software such as EAB Campus/Navigate.
  • Experience with recruitment CRM systems such as Slate.
