Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Development, the Executive Director of Development is responsible for managing his/her portfolio of prospective donors and reaching both individual and team performance goals.
Individual Responsibilities
- Successfully manages a mixed portfolio of 40-60 major gift and developing principal gift prospects, working in concert with other Advancement professionals and campus partners to cultivate, solicit and steward philanthropic support.
- Travels locally, regionally and nationally to meet with prospective donors based on their ability and inclination to make gifts; Executes moves management strategies effectively to build meaningful relationships towards solicitation of 6-7 figure gifts and positive donor relations; Prepares and enters call reports in a timely manner.
- Successfully writes/submits proposals to secure philanthropic funding.
- Negotiates gifts in compliance with adopted gift acceptance policies and procedures; Provides meaningful stewardship and follow through once gifts are made.
- Develops strong relationships with the campus leaders, faculty and staff, providing counsel and coordination for all university development efforts.
- Collaborates with colleagues throughout the Division of University Advancement, developing fundraising plans and activities consistent with Advancement best practices and university priorities.
- Develops and manages long and short-term strategies that support fundraising for the academic colleges, research enterprise and special university initiatives, as well as the achievement of campaign goals.
- Develops annual business plans and budget requests to the AVP and authorizes expenses for managed staff throughout the fiscal year.
- Effectively manages development staff including hiring, metrics development, evaluation, mentoring and professional development.
- Supervises entry of contact data, verifying accuracy of report and ensures quality of accuracy of reports for assigned areas.
- Participates in development of advancement communications strategy.
- Provides reports to AVP for use with University Leadership, Advancement Senior Staff & Boards.
- Advises AVP on policy or procedure needs to make office of development more efficient, productive and donor friendly.
- Serves on Development Leadership Team to support Advancement goals through strategic planning, implementation of advancement best practices, and team leadership.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Seven years of experience in Development in an academic setting
- Proven record of accomplishment in negotiating and stewarding $1M gifts
- Master’s degree or above
- Strong knowledge of institutional advancement
- Demonstrated non-parochial viewpoint
- Impeccable judgment, diplomacy, integrity, and tact
- Flexibility, creativity, leadership, and resourcefulness
- Exceptional communication skills, a strong work ethic, mindfulness, and the ability to think strategically
- Experience collaborating with high-level volunteers and academic leaders
