Director of the Library

The Office of Academic Affairs at the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) is seeking a Director of the University Library. This position is the Library’s chief academic officer as well as the administrative and budget head. The Director holds academic rank and is charged with the administration, academic leadership, and supervision of the operation of the Library through its instructional programs, research, publications, and service activities. Oversight includes activities of Public Services (Circulation, Reference, Interlibrary Loan, Government Documents and building management), Special Collections, and Technical Services. The Director is responsible for strategic planning and top-level decision-making in all areas of the Library. Depending on qualifications and experience, candidates holding full Professor rank may be considered for immediate tenure.  

The Start date for this position will be July 1, 2025.
 Offers strategic vision that develops an ever improving and evolving Library for current and future needs.
 

• Directs/implements strategic planning consistent with and in support of the University strategic plan.
• Develops strong working relationships with Deans, Vice-Presidents, the University President, and other University administrators.
• Active member of the Committee of Deans and Directors.
• Participates in policy development and implementation on a Library-wide basis.
• Is a strong advocate for all programs within the Library.

 
Provides academic/professional leadership. 
 

• Oversees the promotion and tenure process for Library personnel.
• Annually evaluates Library personnel direct reports.
• Recruits, retains, and leads high-quality faculty and staff.
• Mentors and supports faculty in developing scholarship and pedagogical innovation, including grant-funded projects.
• Resolves faculty and staff issues.
• Creates an environment that supports professional excellence.

 
Oversees operational functions for an effective, efficient, and dynamic Library.
 

• Manages space utilization in the Library.
• Assists in monitoring Library business operations, providing input regarding fiscal decision-making.
• Compiles statistics and reports from the Library’s departments to drive decision-making.
• Creates an annual report.
• Creates the Library schedule of operation for each semester utilizing input from Library department heads.
• Serves as co-systems administrator with the Coordinator of Technical Services.

 
Provides external representation to promote the Library and the University.
 

• Attends University, community, and professional events.
• Serves on professional and University committees as assigned.
• Serves as the ULM Library’s representative in the statewide library consortium, LOUIS.
• Represents the Library to external stakeholders.

• Candidates with Associate Professor rank.
• American Library Association accredited Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science.
• Considerable experience with a library management system.
• Several years’ experience in library management and/or administration.
• Record of service that includes activities such as assisting undergraduate students; mentorship of junior colleagues, post-doc researchers, and/or graduate students; and participation in volunteer activities on campus.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
