The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) seeks an experienced, innovative candidate for the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) role.

The Director is essential in advancing academic excellence by building robust professional development programs that enhance instructional quality, expand faculty development opportunities, and improve learning experiences across various delivery methods. This critical position requires the Director to foster collaborative relationships across the campus, partner and systemwide stakeholders, design and enact strategic initiatives, and lead projects that align with UMPI’s academic goals and values. This is a full-time, 12-month position with salary and fringe benefits established by the University. This position is primarily in-person, and in-state, but a hybrid position may be considered for a candidate with the right combination of education and experience.

Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the salary range for this on-campus position is $65,000-78,000 and will take into consideration the salary of current UMS employees for transfer/promotion , plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents. Key Responsibilities include (not limited to):

  • Strategic Leadership and Vision
    • Design and execute a strategic framework to advance CTL's projects and reinforce institutional priorities.
    • Integrate and champion proven instructional practices, such as Experiential Education, Competency-Based Education (CBE), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and innovative, student-centered approaches.
    • Lead efforts to assess and implement effective, cutting-edge teaching methods for in-person, online, hybrid, and hyflex learning environments.
    • Act as a key collaborator and advisor to academic leadership, ensuring faculty development initiatives align closely with the university’s strategic goals.
    • Synthesize institutional goals with data on teaching and learning to inform campus professional development opportunities and proactively communicate gaps to senior leaders.
  • Professional Development for Faculty
    • Develop and deliver impactful professional development initiatives, including workshops, interactive seminars, and asynchronous training tailored to enhance instructional quality.
    • Collaborate with educational leaders (at UMPI, across the UMS system, and nationally contracted guest speakers) to design and facilitate impactful faculty development programs that are timely and relevant to current teaching and learning needs.
    • Manage onboarding and ongoing support for full-time and adjunct faculty, emphasizing UMPI’s teaching standards, academic commitments, pedagogical norms, and accessible technology guidelines.
    • Support courses development, evaluation, and refinement to maintain educational excellence according to recognized benchmarks like Quality Matters (QM) and institutional standards.
    • Planned and conducted annual events, including teaching boot camps, instructional workshops, book discussions, and targeted pre-semester all-faculty workshops in the Fall, Winter, and Spring.
  • Day-to-day Instructional Design Responsibilities
    • Collaborate with CTL staff to work on-on-one with faculty, to address instructional design capabilities, addressing a spectrum of needs such as troubleshooting LMS challenges, revitalizing course content, and strategically integrating educational technology, and creating more relevant engaging assessment practices to optimize learning experiences.
    • Partner with CTL staff to empower faculty in delivering dynamic and engaging in-person, online and online synchronous classes that effectively align with their educational goals and objectives.
    • Support CTL staff in fostering faculty initiatives to design, refresh, and sustain high-quality CBE courses, ensuring they remain relevant and impactful.
    • Collaborate with CTL in maintaining support of the front-line ID support email, as well as Tier II & III teaching and design IT tickets that arise.
    • Maintain and utilize expertise in the administration of all campus and institutionally-supported educational technologies daily, in service of teaching excellence on campus.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Master’s degree specializing in higher education leadership, instructional design, curriculum development, pedagogy, or related discipline.
  • At least five years of professional experience in faculty development, instructional design, or higher education pedagogy.
  • Substantial knowledge and practical experience in applying current pedagogical frameworks such as competency-based education (CBE), universal design for learning (UDL), backward design, and more.
  • Successfully managed personnel, resources, and budgets within diverse and collaborative environments.
  • Proficiency in educational technologies, learning management systems, and evidence-based instructional planning models.

Essential Skills and Capabilities

  • Expertise in administering and utilizing LMS platforms, academic technologies, and web development.
  • Demonstrate exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, fostering an environment of understanding and collaboration.
  • Knowledgeable in designing and implementing effective curricula that align with the science of teaching and learning to enhance student learning and align with institutional goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or ED (or in process) specializing in higher education leadership, instructional design, curriculum development, pedagogy, or related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and learning environments.
  • Significant experience as a faculty member in higher education, demonstrating effective teaching practices.
  • A working knowledge of adult learner and competency-based (CBE) education pedagogy, and associated design practices and industry norms.
