What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lecturer of Earth Surface Processes (Fixed-Length) position at University of Maine?
The School of Earth and Climate Sciences at the University of Maine invites applications for a 2-year, fixed-term lecturer position in Earth Surface Processes. This is a non-tenure track, nine-month academic year, 100% teaching appointment. We seek a vibrant, enthusiastic candidate with strong organizational skills who is committed to fostering an inclusive environment for undergraduate education.
Essential position responsibilities include undergraduate teaching, undergraduate advising, and departmental service. Teaching responsibilities will include mid- and upper-level undergraduate courses focused on Earth systems, hydrogeology, geomorphology, and geospatial applications. Some courses have teaching assistant support, most involve off campus field trips to observe relevant Earth processes, and we strongly encourage undergraduate experiential learning and research experiences. Academic advising for undergraduate students includes developing a plan of study for their degree, as well as addressing ongoing issues such as financial need, academic probation, and student personal issues. The successful candidate will also conduct departmental service such as serving on committees and working groups related to undergraduate education.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Ph.D. in Earth/Climate sciences or closely related field. The degree must be completed prior to the date of employment, but all but dissertation (ABD) candidates are encouraged to apply
- Strong potential for or an established record of teaching excellence
- Strong potential for or an established record of student mentorship
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Comfortable leading outdoor class field trips
- Commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for all learners
Preferred:
- Strong interest in or demonstrated record of engaging undergraduate students in research
- Strong potential for or an established record of collaborative research, including publishing in peer-reviewed journals
- At least one year teaching experience
