Structural Specialist Carpenter CL2

Carpenter performs skilled rough and finish carpentry work in constructing, remodeling, repairing, and maintaining buildings and facilities such as office remodeling/renovation, office, conference room and classroom conversions, wall erection and removal, cutting and patching associated with piping and wiring installation, door installations, carpet and flooring installation, A/C installation and removal, window weatherizing, etc. Full-time, regular position, 40 hours per week. Starting pay for this full-time position is $21.99/hr.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs interior and exterior carpentry work for construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance of the physical assets of the campus.
  • Performs both rough and finish carpentry.
  • Erects, dismantles, and works from scaffolding and at heights.
  • Reads and understands building drawings and diagrams and may produce sketches as needed.
  • Constructs furniture, such as benches and picnic tables.
  • Provides maintenance and upkeep of shop tools and equipment using the appropriate methods of performing such preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Works independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • May perform some components of estimating carpentry jobs.
  • Operates hand and power tools.
  • Requisitions materials.
  • Cleans, sharpens, and performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Responds to emergency calls and performs troubleshooting as needed.
  • Participates in training and adheres to all relevant local, state, and federal safety and regulatory requirements and policies and all University policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 3 years' experience in the carpentry trade
  • Valid Maine driver's license
  • Procedures for operating, inspecting, maintaining, and storing assigned equipment;
  • Providing exemplary customer service;
  • Operating assigned tools and motorized equipment safely and effectively;
  • Performing manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Identifying equipment malfunctions;
  • Performing cleaning and maintenance of equipment;
  • Maintaining records and reports, as required;
  • Must be able to comfortably work in tight areas, from heights and from a squatting/stooping position.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, students, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.
  • Positions in this class typically require: Ability to perform physical activities that require talking, hearing, seeing and considerable and repetitive use of arms and legs and moving entire body, such as reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, climbing, lifting, bending, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Heavy work: The ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Lifting and exerting forces more than 50 pounds requires assistance by other employee(s) or mechanical assistance. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, fire, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, difficult driving conditions, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises and travel.

Preferred

  • Experience working in an institutional setting
  • Experience working in the construction industry
