Position Overview:

The Physics Lab Specialist provides technical and managerial support to the Physics department's research and instructional programs. This includes the Introductory Laboratory Courses, Upper-Level Laboratory Courses, Research Laboratories, Poster Printer, JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Class 100 Clean Room, Machine Shop, and Telescope Facility. The Lab Specialist also acts as an Assistant Building Manager and is a liaison between DoIT and Facilities Management. This position supports the occupants in the building with access, safety, inventory, and IT support. This position requires a self-motivated person possessing a variety of technical and managerial skills at a professional level. The Lab Specialist is very involved in the department's mission of education, research and outreach.

Responsibilities:
Provide technical and managerial support to the Physics department's research and instructional programs. This includes support for the Introductory Laboratory Courses, Upper-Level Laboratory Courses, research laboratories, JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Class 100 Clean Room, Machine Shop, and Telescope Facility.
  • Troubleshoot/repair equipment to resolve issues in the Introductory and Upper-Level Laboratory Courses to ensure the students can complete their lab assignments. Arrange for additional support as required.
  • Provide IT support for departmental computers and printers, including poster printer. Provide infrastructure support for office and lab spaces. Arrange for additional support as required. Provide AV support for the Physics Seminars. Liaison between Physics and AV Services.
  • Assist in developing and updating experimental setups and demonstrations for various departmental efforts, including Introductory Laboratory Courses, Upper-Level Laboratory Courses, research laboratories, outreach efforts and Lecture Courses.
  • Act as an Assistant Building Manager and liaison between DoIT and Facilities Management. Submit work order requests to Facilities, submit RT Tickets to DoIT, attend meetings with FM and DoIT. Implement changes to campus procedures across the Physics Department. Fill in for Building Manager when out of the office.
  • Work with the Plant Accounting Department to maintain the Physics department's capital and sensitive inventories.
  • Manage key control and distribution, and roof and room access control.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree required, preferably in a STEM-related field such as Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a similar technical discipline.
  • Two years of experience in a STEM-related technical role, with a strong foundation in technical problem-solving and hands-on work across various disciplines. Experience in IT support, with familiarity in multiple operating systems, including Macintosh and Windows.

    Note: A Bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required two years of experience in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a STEM-related field such as Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a similar technical discipline.
  • Four years of experience in a STEM-related technical role, with a strong foundation in technical problem-solving and hands-on work across various disciplines. Experience in IT support, with familiarity in multiple operating systems, including Macintosh and Windows.

Salary:

Salary: $61,000 - $68,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
