The University of Maryland seeks an experienced, creative, and forward-thinking leader to serve as Chief Development Officer (CDO) for the College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU). This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in a dynamic advancement team currently in the silent phase of a 10-figure university-wide campaign.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Development in University Relations with a dotted line to the Dean, the CDO is the chief fundraiser for the College of Arts and Humanities. The CDO carries a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects and is the unit manager on behalf of University Relations for the College of Arts and Humanities. This individual will be responsible for the identification of major and principal level donors. They will identify and engage regional development markets in collaboration with development colleagues and maintain development travel schedules. This individual will lead a comprehensive engagement and fundraising program to support the strategic initiatives of the College. They will initiate first alumni contact for the Dean, faculty, and other administrators, and coordinate with all development staff and gift stewardship activities with donor relations.
The CDO will serve as a member of the Dean’s senior staff for the College and partner with the Dean and key faculty in the development and successful implementation of strategies to advance the goals of the College through philanthropic support; these will include but are not limited to program and center directors, marketing and communications, and offices of career services and experiential learning. This individual will partner with the Dean in the design , recruitment, and support of the Dean’s Advisory Board for the College.
The CDO will also oversee a talented team of senior gift officers and advancement professionals that focus on major and principal gifts from individuals, corporate and foundation philanthropic support, alumni engagement and donor relations and stewardship. The CDO is responsible for working with University Relations to set relevant metrics, keep the team motivated and on task, and consistently hit fundraising goals for the unit with a focus on sustained growth through the campaign. The CDO will be a key development leader in the launch and success of the campaign, working collaboratively across UR and the College to set priorities and strategize opportunities for donor engagement and growth.
The Chief Development Officer will collaborate with the central University Relations teams including, but not limited to, the Office of Gift Planning, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Broad Based Campaigns and Strategic Engagement, Regional Giving, Prospect Management and Research, Donor Relations and Stewardship, the Alumni Association, the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, and Principal Gifts to advance the College’s philanthropic objectives. Further, they will coordinate strategic development events and develop a major gifts pipeline to build a qualified prospect base for the College in support of the upcoming campaign.
The College of Arts and Humanities is one of the 12 colleges or schools at the University of Maryland. With 14 academic units, 30 major and 39 minor programs, and 20 research centers, the College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU) encompasses a diverse array of academic disciplines, research and cultural centers, and initiatives.

Ability to identify and build constituencies for support, in setting and achieving individual and group goals, and in planning and executing campaigns.
Experience with corporate and foundation fundraising.
Knowledgeable about best practices in the advancement field.
Exceptional verbal, editing management and organization skills.
The ability to relate with department chairs, center directors, and research faculty to articulate priorities, accomplishments, and aspirations to these diverse external audiences.
Must have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a large university with an integrated development program.
Availability and willingness to work evenings, weekends and outside standard business hours. Some local and national travel is required.
Physical Demands:
Work is performed in a traditional office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Some occasional evening and weekend work is required as necessary. Travel is required up to 40% of the time. Driver’s license and access to a vehicle required.
Preferences:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
Previous experience in higher education institutions.
Experience with other aspects of fundraising including planned giving.
Background or strong interest in programs promoting the arts and humanities.
Licenses/ Certifications: N/A
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Ten (10) years of fundraising, including experience in major and principal gifts fundraising. Three (3) years of experience supervising or managing professional staff.
Knowledge of the principles of management and leadership.
Knowledge of financial policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable human resources related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
Ability to work on multiple projects and programs simultaneously.
Ability to conduct research and analysis for aid program development.
Ability to analyze data and provide insight and recommendations to stakeholders.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to resolve complex financial related problems by applying various methodologies and deciding between several alternative solutions.
