Job Overview

As an integral member of the healthcare team, the Art Therapist employs active art-making, creative processes, and applied psychological theories to cultivate therapeutic relationships, effectively aiding patients in achieving their personal and relational treatment objectives. Through the Art Therapy approach, the therapist facilitates the expression of thoughts and emotions, enhances cognitive and sensorimotor functions, nurtures self-esteem, fosters emotional resilience, and promotes insight. This role involves providing developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive Art Therapy, tailored to the psychological, social, and emotional needs of patients, in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Art Therapy services that enhance the psychological and emotional well-being of patients and their families, based on referrals from the healthcare team.
  • Conduct individual, group, and family Art Therapy sessions with defined short-term and long-term goals, derived from thorough assessments and observations.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation of Art Therapy sessions in patient records, ensuring timely and comprehensive progress notes.
  • Engage in effective communication with interdisciplinary healthcare team members regarding patient care planning and insights from Art Therapy sessions.
  • Provide educational in-services on Art Therapy to enhance awareness and understanding within the medical center.
  • Collaborate with local universities to establish and sustain an Art Therapy internship program, mentoring interns in delivering appropriate Art Therapy services.
  • Keep accurate records of Art Therapy session statistics to support performance improvement initiatives.
  • Adhere to established infection control protocols and safety standards in clinical practice and resource management.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Proficient in practicing Art Therapy within the professional scope established by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.
  • Strong assessment and observational capabilities to inform therapy sessions.
  • Excellent communication skills to facilitate effective teamwork within the healthcare context.
  • Experience in leading individual, group, and family therapy sessions.
  • Competence in maintaining detailed documentation for patient records.
  • Ability to conduct educational sessions on Art Therapy principles and practices.
  • Knowledgeable in infection control measures and safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • Relevant licensure as an Art Therapist in alignment with Maryland state requirements.
  • Advanced training in psychological theories and therapeutic techniques pertinent to Art Therapy.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing Art Therapy services in a healthcare environment.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
