What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant, Cardiology position at University of Maryland Medical System?
Medical Assistants are responsible for providing patient centric care and medical assistance duties for UMMS Ambulatory Care patients.
Principle Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
1. Greets and assists patients and other guests in a professional, friendly, hospitable manner.
2. Question patients in regard to recent hospitalizations and recent outpatient testing, ensuring those records are available for the provider.
3. Room patients and provide triage services, including vital signs, review of symptoms and chief complaint in an electronic medical record (EMR).
4. Update patients' medication list in the EMR.
5. Proficient in full range of medical assisting skills, perform EKGs, manual blood pressures, stress testing and holter monitoring.
6. Triage phone calls from patients and communicates this information via the EMR to the providers. Places return phone calls as directed by the providers.
7. Completes pharmacy/patient refill requests as directed by the providers. Completes prior authorizations for medications when required.
8. Maintains EKG machines, blood pressure cuffs, holter monitor equipment, and stress testing equipment by cleaning/sanitizing and replacing electrodes, lead wires, paper, etc. Contacts biomed department for repairs when necessary.
9. Cleans exam rooms and keeps them properly stocked with needed supplies and patient gowns.
10. Handle the incoming faxed bloodwork.
11. Maintain sample drug closet by organizing and properly disposing of all expired medications.
12. Monitors medical supplies and patient gowns for the office. Coordinating the placement of orders and putting supplies away in the office.
13. Complies with established departmental/organizational policies for attendance, punctuality, procedures and safety.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma is required.
- Successful completion of a formal medical assistant training program is required. In absence of program completion, one year of related work experience will be accepted.
- BLS/CPR Certification required.

- Requires travel between system locations.
