Under general supervision, deliver exceptional treatment planning by developing accurate computerized isodose plans for patients undergoing radiation therapy.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following duties outline the general expectations for this role. They are not an exhaustive list of all tasks performed by dosimetrists.
- Calculate dose distributions and create isodose curves for both external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy, adhering to departmental protocols and standard dosimetry practices.
- Collaborate with Radiation Oncologists, Physicists, and Senior Dosimetrists to formulate optimal treatment plans for external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy utilizing various treatment planning software. Integrate anatomical data from imaging sources like CT, MRI, X-rays, and ultrasound to protect normal structures and effectively target treatment areas as directed by physicians.
- Determine treatment machine settings including field arrangements and parameters; meticulously document all calculations and record treatment details in therapy charts.
Quality Assurance Responsibilities
Conduct verification checks and implement quality assurance protocols to confirm the precision of dose calculations. Review patient charts to verify that treatment plans comply with physician prescriptions, ensuring documentation is thorough and dose calculations are precise. Report any dose discrepancies and alterations in treatment parameters to the physicist and physician.Support in the simulation process and development of custom treatment devices.Assist technical staff in patient setup, contouring, and other simulation methodologies.Design and produce shielding, immobilization devices, and various treatment aids.Brachytherapy Assistance
Order radioactive materials for temporary or permanent implants as directed by physicians. Prepare for brachytherapy procedures including source management, inventory, and transport of required materials.Assist physicists with quality assurance checks for brachytherapy devices and participate in the creation of treatment plans under the oversight of a Physicist or Radiation Oncologist, including calculating strengths for sources.Conduct patient and facility radiation surveys with the appropriate monitoring tools.Education and Training
