Data Analyst-Contractual -(O)

The Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR-ORC) / Trauma Patient Safety Division at the University of Maryland, Baltimore is seeking a Data Analyst . The data analyst accomplishes responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training. This individual resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking and also contributes to development and evaluation of goals and objectives. Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance. May also independently manage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources. The data analyst applies intermediate level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills.

STAR-ORC is a world-class, multi-disciplinary research and educational center focusing on brain injuries, critical care and organ support, resuscitation, surgical outcomes, patient safety and injury prevention. It is the first research center in the nation dedicated exclusively to the study of trauma, its complications and prevention. The Patient Safety Division within STAR-ORC focuses on developing the advanced algorithms and devices for predicting patient status.

The Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research Center serves as a research umbrella for the Department of Anesthesiology and the Program in Trauma. Many of the researchers working in the new research center are doctors who care for trauma patients at the University of Maryland’s R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

Essential Functions :

  • Understands, evaluates, and elicits requirements for complex business questions and challenges. Participates as a member or a lead on multi-function teams and project planning activities, helps to ensure that projects are completed in a timely and cost effective manner.
  • Provide decisions and recommendations on project priorities, functional design changes, process improvements and problem resolution.
  • Identify and understand relevant internal and external data for analysis. Design new process and builds large, complex data sets. Identify unique opportunities to collect new data and strategizes new uses for data and its interaction with data design.
  • Apply rigorous validation methods to models and provide realistic expectations of model performance when it is generalized to new data. Review publications and literature to validate theories and models.
  • Clearly communicate insights discovered from models in a manner which is easily interpretable by general business users. Produce ad hoc, as well as ongoing reports, graphs, charts, tables, and other visualizations to convey hidden patterns and knowledge in data. May present results at meetings and / or conferences.
  • Prototype and demonstrates solutions in analytical software such as Matlab, SAS, SPSS, R, and Minitab, and interprets and conveys results using a variety of different visualization tools.
  • Assist the automation of data input, data retrieval, manipulation, and analysis, application of statistics, and visualization tools. Assist in the management of key processes involved in IT infrastructure design, database design, interface design, and information processing for value-based product utilization initiatives.
  • Assist investigators with evaluating research projects, assist in the preparation of required agency and / or funder reporting; assist with the preparation of manuscripts and presentations; devise new research proposals; and apply for funding and grants.
  • Assist in implementation new or enhanced software designed to access and handle data more efficiently.
  • Train the data users on new or updated procedures.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Education : Bachelor's degree in predictive analytics, computer science, statistics, mathematics, economics, or related field.

Experience : Demonstrated experience with meta-analysis, systematic reviews, and advanced structural equation modeling.

Preferred Experience : Clinical experience in a trauma / hospital setting. Familiarity with EPIC.

Other : Related experience maybe substituted for education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology / systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.

Knowledge of deploying data science solutions to the business environment. Knowledge of big data and data mining concepts and technologies. Knowledge data modeling techniques such as : Classification (e.g. Decision Trees and Support Vector Machine), Regression (i.e. Linear and Nonlinear), Clustering (e.g. K-means, and Fuzzy), Time-series modelling and forecasting (e.g. ARIMA, GARCH, and Exponential Smoothing), and Statistical Analysis (e.g. Hierarchical Modeling and Hypothesis Testing).

Hiring Range : $67, - $75,;Commensurate with education and experience.
