Job Description - Clinical Toxicologist (Maryland Poison Center) (240001ST)The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP), Department of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research (PSHOR) has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Toxicologist to work within the Maryland Poison Center (MPC).The Clinical Toxicologist will have responsibility for implementation of the health care professional education program and serves as a lead resource of the poison center. The selected candidate must have an active DABAT certification or eligibility. DABAT eligible candidates must obtain certification within two (2) years of hire date.The position requires working with various education providers throughout the state to help train nurses, pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, and first responders on poisoning and overdose patient management. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to clinical quality improvement and assurance programs, staff development, research, and education programs. The successful candidate must have the ability to rapidly integrate large amounts of information, be able to effectively communicate complex content quickly and efficiently to a wide range of learners and be able to identify likely causes for patients' symptoms. The Clinical Toxicologist should be able to independently make patient care decisions with access to resources in the MPC as well as other experts in toxicology. Exempt regular staff receive a generous PAID leave package that includes over 4 weeks of vacation accrued each year, 15 paid holidays, 3 personal leave, unlimited accrual of sick time, and comprehensive health insurance; professional learning and development programs; tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any University System of Maryland school; and flexible work schedules and teleworking options (if applicable per job).PRIMARY DUTIESAssists in the educational mission of the MPC with an emphasis on health professional education and outreach.Leads recruitments and admissions of fellows in the clinical toxicology fellowship program, and coordinates projects and rotations for the fellowship.Contributes to and leads research projects.Trains and coordinates work assignments of specialists in poison information.Leads and implements the Maryland Poison Center (MPC)'s professional education outreach efforts.Develops content for and complies with requirements for continuing education for health professionals.Presents and promotes educational topics throughout the state using various mediums.Provides emergency triage and treatment information over the phone and documents telephone interactions using MPC standard format.Contributes to clinical quality improvement projects.Provides support for MPC surveillance program and other administrative support services.Serves as a liaison between the MPC and city, county, and local fire departments.Produces and deploys electronic educational content for the MPC (e.g., Tox Tidbits, Antidote Fact Sheets, etc.).Develops content for MPC website.Produces content for MPC Professional Education social media accounts.Performs other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation : Bachelor's degree in pharmacy or nursing. Master’s degree in nursing or doctoral degree in pharmacy (Pharm.D) preferred.Experience : Four (4) years of experience as a certified specialist in a poison center, patient care, clinical research, biomedical research, research project management or other related experience in a clinical environmentORTwo (2) years of experience as a certified specialist in a poison center, patient care, clinical research, biomedical research, research project management or other related experience in a clinical environment and completion of a two (2) year clinical toxicology fellowshipORTwo (2) years of experience as a certified specialist in a poison center, patient care, clinical research, biomedical research, research project management or other related experience in a clinical environment and completion of a one (1) year clinical toxicology fellowship and a one (1) year PGY1 residency.Preferred Experience : Strong clinical experience in managing poisoning and overdose patients preferred.Certification / Licensure : Current Maryland licensure in good standing to practice as a pharmacist or registered nurse required. Active Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (DABAT) certification or eligibility required. DABAT eligible candidates must successfully pass the DABAT certification exam within two (2) years of hire date.Other : Weekend, holiday, rotating shift work, and on-call is required. Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and / or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job.
