Organization's Summary Statement:


The Department of Residential Facilities is responsible for the maintenance and housekeeping services for the College Park Campus' 70 residence halls, Greek chapter houses, and recreational facilities encompassing over 2.7 million square feet. The department employs over 300 exempt, non-exempt, and student staff.


Primary Responsibilities:

The Environmental Health and Safety Manager provides leadership and direction in creating and maintaining a positive safety culture in the department. Analyzes injury incident trend data and evaluates department programs and practices to develop and implement “safe work” programs.

Ensures appropriate training is available for staff to adhere to work practices and policies and comply with university, state, and federal workplace safety, health, and environmental requirements.

Collaborate with and assist residential facilities supervisors in assessing hazards and formulating solutions, partnering with Environmental Safety, Sustainability, and Risk (ESSR) if necessary. The Director of the Department of Residential Facilities will supervise the Incumbent.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

* A normal office environment includes keyboarding, drafting correspondence, planning/documentation, and making notes. Able to push, pull, lift, and carry objects up to 25 pounds. * Ability to travel around campus for meetings and monitor observations of work activities for building conditions.

* Move and set up tables and chairs as part of the room set up for training sessions.

* May be asked to assist with and/or support department-wide activities in the residence halls and other campus buildings, which may require walking between buildings and climbing stairs.

* The position will require access to areas using ladders and/or scaffolding and on-site during inclement weather.

* The position will be required to work outdoors, in confined spaces, in utility rooms, and at rooftop elevations to assess/inspect safety conditions.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Experience in an organization with a strong, positive safety culture is preferred.

* Experience working with a Union workforce is preferred.

* A strong understanding of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and industry best practices is preferred.

* Experience conducting safety inspections and hazard assessments is preferred.

* Completion of the OSHA 501 course or higher to deliver OSHA 10-hour training is preferred.

* Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and recommend preventative measures is preferred.

* Bilingual preferences in speaking and writing are preferred.

* Familiarity with mold/Indoor Air Quality identification, abatement, and training requirements is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.


Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in facility maintenance, repair or restoration, building and hazardous materials, or construction safety.


Other:

Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of asbestos identification, abatement and disposal practices.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of lead paint management, assessment, abatement, and disposal practices.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position requires an on-site presence. May be able to work remotely one day per week.
  • As an exempt employee, the incumbent will be expected to work the hours needed to manage the duties of their position. Some evening and weekend work is required.
  • This position is an essential employee related to catastrophic weather or other emergencies and may be required to come to campus/work remotely when the University is closed.
