What are the responsibilities and job description for the IT Senior Engineer position at University of Maryland?
As a senior member of the Linux Administration team, the Senior Linux Engineer is responsible for all aspects of the University Linux environment, ensuring they are managed in a secure and modern fashion. Working collaboratively with other Linux Administration staff, Platform Engineering, and other operational units, this role functions as a forward-thinking engineer and administrator who can also solve complex day-to-day IT problems. This person will need strong DevOps principles, automation, and system architecture background. Utilizing tools such as Puppet, Red Hat Satellite, and AWS CloudFormation, this person will deploy OS patches, provision new machines, manage configuration states, deploy new AWS solutions, and troubleshoot existing on-prem and cloud deployments, ensuring system security, maximum uptime, and service stability.
This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services.
Physical Demands :
The employee is also occasionally required to lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds in weight. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and listen. The employee is occasionally required to walk and use hands to operate computers, objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may need to work evenings, weekends, and after-hours on occasion.

Preferences :
- Four (4) years of professional experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure.
- Experience, including administration and management of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 or greater, including installation, configuration, optimization, backup, and recovery.
- In-depth knowledge of Unix / Linux (RedHat) operating system internals, client / server computing techniques, distributed systems management concepts, server virtualization, and all aspects of computer communications.
- Administration of Linux in both virtualized (Hyper-V) and cloud (AWS) environments.
Ability to work concurrently on multiple projects, adjust to changes in priorities, and respond efficiently and effectively to emergencies.
