Organization Summary Statement :
Andrew Broadbent, DVM, PhD, in the department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, is recruiting a postdoctoral research associate to join his lab, which focuses on avian viruses. We are seeking a highly motivated and creative individual to work on projects that aim to define the molecular basis underpinning the mechanism of viral-induced immunosuppression, and how viral-induced immunosuppression in domestic poultry influences the pathogenicity, evolution, and transmission of opportunistic infections.
Responsibilities :
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing their own projects that deliver excellent high-impact research, both working independently and liaising with other team members. This will involve : collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, contributing to the development of new techniques and methods, managing projects to time and budget, contributing to meetings and discussions, presenting data internally and externally at conferences, generating high impact research publications, and supervising students.
Minimum Qualifications :
Applicants are required to hold a PhD in virology, immunology, or another relevant area, or an equivalent degree (e.g. MD, DVM, etc.). Applicants must have at least 3 years' laboratory experience and a proven track record of first-author publications or pre-prints in virology, immunology, or another relevant field.
Physical Demands :
- This position requires the lifting and moving of moderately weighted goods (20-50 lbs., for example, Centrifuge Rotors) up to 25 feet, operating tissue culture cells or zebrafish tanks, and utilizing hazardous chemicals, radioisotopes, and compressed gases. While performing the duties within this job, the employee frequently is required to maneuver, handle, or feel objects, tools, or instrument controls. The position also requires prolonged periods of standing to include maneuvering obstacles which may require stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling and accessing necessary tools and objects. Furthermore, the employee is regularly required to operate a computer.
- To operate specific lab equipment, the employee must utilize devices and make observations from diverse angles of perception : adjusting exploratory and imaging devices as needed. Employees may work in conditions with fluctuating temperatures, including spaces up to 83 F for extended periods.
Preferences :
A PhD in virology is preferred, as is experience with cloning, cell culture, reverse genetics, confocal microscopy, and immunology techniques, and experience with in vivo animal studies of infection and immunity. Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, networking skills, and the ability to work as part of a team, and plan their own work and objectives independently are also highly desired.
