The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, is seeking a full time Assistant Scientist for the Department of Research - Ophthalmology, in Miami, Florida.

The Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) carries out a particular research agenda in support of the University’s research goals and objectives. Moreover, the Assistant Scientist, SOM (A) contributes to the scientific community by publishing research findings and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                          

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.

  • Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals.

  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.

  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.

  • Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.

  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff.

  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).

  • Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.

  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree relevant field

Experience:  

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

  • Conducts cutting-edge professional and scientific research in the field of gene therapy for inherited retinopathies.

  • Research activities encompass a wide range of techniques, including but not limited to:

  • Cell culture: Proficient in culturing various cell types relevant to inherited retinopathies.

  • Transduction and transfection: Skilled in delivering genetic material into target cells using viral vectors and other transfection methods.

  • Viral vector construction and DNA cloning: Expertise in constructing customized viral vectors for gene delivery and manipulating DNA sequences for experimental purposes.

  • RNA extraction: Proficient in isolating RNA from cells and tissues for gene expression analysis.

  • Flow cytometry: Experienced in utilizing flow cytometry to analyze and sort cells based on specific markers or characteristics.

  • PCR/qPCR: Well-versed in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and quantitative PCR (qPCR) techniques for amplifying and quantifying DNA or RNA samples.

  • Immunostaining: Skilled in using immunostaining techniques to visualize and detect specific proteins or cellular markers.

  • Western blotting: Proficient in conducting western blot experiments to analyze protein expression levels.

  • BN-PAGE: Knowledgeable in performing blue native-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (BN-PAGE) to study protein complexes and their interactions.

  • Electroretinogram: Experienced in measuring and interpreting electroretinograms to assess retinal function.

  • Optical coherence tomography: Proficient in utilizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging to examine retinal structures and detect abnormalities.

  • Mitochondrial animal models: Skilled in working with animal models specifically designed to study mitochondrial dysfunction in retinopathies.
