Core Job Functions
Identifies, handles, and accessions patient samples requiring laboratory testing. Transports specimens and communicates test results timely and accurately. Maintains required laboratory files and logs system in a neat and accurate manner. Performs specimen processing, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement. Maintains adequate inventory level as per protocol. Participates in the performance improvement processes for the department. Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions
Register internal and external patient consult cases (primary reads, second opinions) in One-Click/UChart, including personal cases sent for second opinions. Perform grossing for internal, external, and personal consult cases. Communicate with outside facilities to resolve missing information, documentation, and discrepancies on requisitions. Obtain payment information and process payments for self-pay and international consult cases. Maintain documentation of all processed and received payments. Place orders in CoPath for recuts of patient material when only a block is received for consultation. One-Click all Histology, Cytology, Core Lab, and UMMG Clinic requisitions. Process technical work-only cases. Prepare patient cases for testing and analysis. Evaluate collected data to confirm accuracy. Upload original patient material to CoPath and UChart. Review all patient and clinician requests to ensure necessary documentation is received. Manage designated folders in the Pathology Main Inbox. Receive, sort, and track international and external cases received by FedEx and other carriers. Return patient materials (slides, blocks) to originating facilities promptly. Assist patients, clients, and visitors. Maintain a pending list of problem cases. Answer multiple incoming lines and triage questions from outside facilities and clinicians. Assist customers with requested information and resolve pathologist-related issues. Maintain a log of client specimens sent for additional testing, tumor boards, second opinions, and research. Document the return of patient specimens in CoPath. Handle packaging and shipment of slides, blocks, and patient reports to the offsite storage facility (Iron Mountain). Maintain a database of materials sent to Iron Mountain. Resolve patient specimen issues. Work with faculty, residents, and fellows to locate missing specimens requested by pathologists, outside facilities, and clinicians. Other duties as assigned.
