The Resident PGY 3 participates, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, in structured programs to develop skills in all six of the general competencies, as outlined by the ACGME. The incumbent demonstrates basic competency by rendering patient services in an accurate and effective manner.
JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Counsels and educates patients and families.
2. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which are essential to the practice of medicine.
3. Functions as an internal medicine consultant.
4. Integrates clinical common sense and judgment with medical knowledge.
5. Uses own knowledge base and other resources for clinical problem-solving.
6. Analyzes own practice for needed improvement.
7. Finds and uses evidence from scientific studies and clinical guidelines.
8. Relates to and communicates with colleagues and advocates for patients within the healthcare system.
9. Uses systematic approaches to improve patient care and reduce errors.
10. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Department Specific Functions
1. This position is part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Regional Medical Campus General Surgery Residency program located at Holy Cross Hospital in Broward County.
2. Coordinate patient care among all members of the health care team.
3. Performs admission, consultation, evaluation, diagnosis, surgical treatment, pre-operative care and post-operative care of patients with general surgical problems.
4. Manage patients appropriately based on available evidence, sound judgment, and patient preferences.
5. Formulate diagnostic and surgical treatment plans independently.
6. Use information technology to support patient care decisions.
7. Identifies the need for patient education and orders or provides education.
8. Gain competence in bedside teaching.
9. Demonstrates the ability for effective problem identification and resolution as well as the exercise of independent judgment.
10. Demonstrates dexterity and competency to perform essential and required procedures and provides complete written documentation of all procedures.
11. Work with ancillary team members to provide high quality, cost effective health care.
12. Demonstrates awareness and applies knowledge of quality control measures and risk management skills.
13. PGY 3 General Surgery Residents are required to supervise and train junior residents and medical students in clinical tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
All PGY 3 General Surgery Residents must have a M.D. or D.O degree.
Certification and Licensing:
- ECFMG certification is required for medical degrees obtained outside the United States.
- PGY 3 General Surgery Residents must maintain a valid training license in the State of Florida throughout the duration of the training program.
- PGY 3 General Surgery Residents must maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification throughout the duration of the training program.
Experience:
All PGY 3 General Surgery Residents must have successfully completed two years of training in an ACGME accredited General Surgery Residency program.

- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
