The successful candidate will provide counsel and support to the University's fully integrated academic medical center ('Michigan Medicine'), its state-wide clinical enterprise, ('University of Michigan Health'), and periodically will advise the University's other schools, colleges, and administrative areas on health care regulatory matters. The successful candidate must be able to work independently on a wide range of complex and novel issues, with a particular focus on regulatory matters. The role will be tailored to the unique qualifications and experiences of the selected candidate as those talents relate to client needs and other OGC team members' areas of expertise and workloads. This attorney will be based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The OGC team currently works a hybrid model with three days a week in the office.Who We AreThe University of Michigan is one of the greatest public research universities in the United States.   • A minimum of four (4) years providing legal advice on health care regulatory matters;A commitment to the mission of academic medicine, higher education, and health care;Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple, complex, often time-sensitive assignments simultaneously and with a high degree of organization and effectiveness;Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders and clients, both internal and external;Demonstrated ability to listen and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse populations;Excellent academic and professional credentials;Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills;Collegiality and a willingness to support colleagues with a commitment to Michigan Medicine values of caring, innovation, inclusion, integrity, and teamwork;Commitment to delivering expeditious, high-quality service to our clients;Integrity and a strong moral and ethical compass;Law degree from an accredited law school;Admission to the State Bar of Michigan Bar or eligibility for immediate admission.Desired Qualifications
  • Significant experience providing regulatory analysis and support to strategic initiatives, such as innovative payment programs and value-based enterprises;Significant experience assessing and advising on Medicare conditions of participation for hospitals;Experience identifying Stark and Anti-kickback issues and applying fraud and abuse analyses;Experience advising on Medicare reimbursement requirements, provider enrollment, and provider-based requirements;Experience advising accountable care organizations and clinically integrated networks;Experience reviewing and negotiating contracts for a health system;Experience working with public entities, academic medical centers, and non-profit, tax-exempt entities;Experience applying the Michigan Public Health and Mental Health Code;Ability to participate in the Michigan Medicine 'attorney on call' rotation and develop expertise in other emergent patient care issues.Modes of WorkPositions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile / remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.Additional InformationCompensation : Competitive salary and benefits.Relocation : Yes, this is a national search.Experience : At least four (4) years of experience providing legal advice on healthcare regulatory matters. Law firm or in-house health system experience is preferred.
