Job Summary

Position Overview:

The at the University of Michigan's School of Kinesiology invites applications for a Lecturer III position. This position offers an initial appointment of three years, with the possibility of renewal. This university-year, nine (9) month non-tenure track role is primarily focused on teaching (75%) with additional administrative responsibilities (25%). The successful candidate will be expected to teach three sport management courses per semester (fall and winter terms). Administrative responsibilities will be based on the programs' needs, as well as the candidate's expertise and prior experience. Ideal candidates will be able to teach our Sport Management (SM) 101 and SM 111 courses, and there is potential to instruct other 100 and 200-level courses within the program.

Course Descriptions:

  • SM 101 Public and Small Group Communication (3 credit hours)
    This undergraduate course explores principles of informative and persuasive speaking in a business context, focusing on evidence-driven presentations for target audiences.
  • SM 111 Historical & Sociological Issues in Sport & Fitness (3 credit hours)
    This undergraduate course examines the ways in which sport and physical activity are affected by historical and social forces, and in turn, how sport and physical activity influences society.

Responsibilities*

Instructional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide high-quality instruction for one to two sections of SM 101 Public & Small Group Communication each semester
  • Provide high-quality instruction for two to three sections of SM 111 Historical & Sociological Issues in Sport & Fitness each semester
  • Develop and deliver engaging course content that meets the rigorous academic standards of the Sport Management Program
  • Create and contribute to course syllabi and lesson plans
  • Produce relevant and reliable assessment tools and conduct routine assessments to evaluate student progress throughout the semester
  • Maintain student progress and attendance records and determine and enter final grades for the course
  • Meet with students for office hours and attend program and school meetings, as needed

Required Qualifications*

The successful candidate must have:

  • Earned a master's degree, preferably in sport management or a related field
  • Prior knowledge of and experience with historical and sociological issues affecting sport and fitness, including issues of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, age, and ability at the youth, scholastic, collegiate, and professional level of sport (e.g., related professional or teaching experience or research background)
  • An ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and industry partners
  • Demonstrate contributions to a positive workplace culture aligned with our school's .

Desired Qualifications*

  • Earned a doctoral degree
  • College-level teaching experience, which could include being a teaching assistant, instructor of a recitation course, or having primary responsibility for teaching a college-level course
