Job Summary

The Division of Diagnostic Genetics and Genomics (DGG) at Michigan Medicine is expanding its cutting-edge clinical testing capabilities, integrating state-of-the-art technologies like whole genome sequencing (WGS), optical genome mapping (OGM), and next-generation sequencing (NGS). We are seeking talented Medical Laboratory Scientists to join our growing team.

Responsibilities*

To perform a variety of routine or specialized tests and procedures for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of patients in one or more areas of work within the Division of Diagnostics and Genetics (DGG).Molecular Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics, and other specialty departments.

Testing & Quality Control: Conduct waived, moderate, and high-complexity tests, analyze samples, document quality control, and report results accurately. Testing could include Chromosomal Microarray, Next Generation Sequencing, Whole Genome Sequencing, and other molecular techniques.


Laboratory Instrument Maintenance: Perform daily maintenance, troubleshoot issues, monitor reagents, and ensure continuous instrument operation.


General Lab Operations: Maintain cleanliness, handle biohazard waste, assist with media and reagent preparation, and ensure compliance with safety standards.


Training & Education: Support new employees, maintain competencies, and meet continuing education requirements.


Clerical & Administrative Support: Answer calls, document results, manage inventory, scan and file documents, and assist lab leaders with technical procedures.


Specimen Processing & Accessioning: Receive, label, centrifuge, aliquot, and distribute specimens while ensuring accuracy and quality control.


Other Duties: Support lab operations as needed.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This role will have duties and responsibilities in one or more areas of work within the Division of Diagnostics and Genetics (DGG), such as Molecular Genetics, Molecular Diagnostics, Cytogenetics, and other specialty departments.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials.
May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system.
Requires frequent (standing/walking/sitting/hand pipetting) for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to 25lbs.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Science or other biological science.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist or eligibility for certification at the time of hire.
  • Specialized laboratories may accept a Bachelor degree in a biological science with certification eligibility specific to that laboratory.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience in a clinical molecular laboratory
  • Molecular data analysis experience including Sanger sequencing, Next Generation sequencing, and/or chromosomal microarrays
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of our team
  • Excellent attendance, ability to prioritize appropriately, and exercise good judgment
  • Competent computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel and willingness to learn specialized software packages

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is M-F on the day shift and will require rotating weekends, holidays and on call schedule with other staff.

Work Locations

This position will be located at the North Campus Research Complex on Plymouth Rd but may require travel to the Medical Complex.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
