Job Summary

General Pharmacy Technician duties may include:

  • Pharmacy Technician, Community Pharmacy Services:

    • Gather prescription insurance coverage information

    • Perform prescription order entry and fulfillment

    • Perform basic metric conversions and calculations

    • Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounds

    • Greet patients and answer phones

    • Assist with the resolution of medication access barriers

    • Collaborate with nursing, social work, providers, pharmacists, and others to optimize patient care

    • Assist with problem solving and process improvements within the pharmacy

    • Assist with the training and oversight of other staff and learners (pharmacy students, residents and interns)

    • Must exhibit good communication skills in dealing with patients and/or families, who may have compromised health or language barriers and with other members of the health care team. Be adaptable to diverse patient care environments

    • Exhibit strong attention to detail, accuracy and the ability to work independently

    • Other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor to facilitate safe and efficient patient care

  • Pharmacy Technician, Transitions of Care Meds to Beds Program:

    • Gather information for prescription insurance coverage, home pharmacy, and preferred pharmacy for prescription filling

    • Identify and resolve medication access barriers, such as prior authorizations and other insurance barriers, in collaboration with the health care team

    • Assist with filling of discharge prescriptions

    • Provide bedside delivery of discharge prescriptions

    • Provide follow-up and coordination to ensure patient access to discharge medications

    • Collect data to determine process and outcomes measures of program

    • Assist with problem solving and process improvements relevant to the program

    • Assist with the training and oversight of other staff and learners (pharmacy students, residents and interns)

    • Must exhibit good communication skills in dealing with patients and/or families, who may have compromised health or language barriers and with other members of the health care team. Be adaptable to diverse patient care environments.

Required Qualifications*

Ability to perform a wide range of physical activity: lifting, pulling, bending, manual dexterity movements. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, prioritize with accuracy and dependability: Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English.

Pharmacy Technician Associate:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.

Pharmacy Technician Intermediate:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
  • One or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability

Pharmacy Technician Senior:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before hire date, verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Two or more years of relevant pharmacy practice or equivalent experience is necessary.
  • Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability

Desired Qualifications*

At least one year of technician experience or completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program is highly desirable. Basic algebra including performing pharmacy calculations is also highly desired.

Licensure & Certification

“The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.

Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain eployment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position. Hours depend on the community pharmacy operational hours. Shifts start as early as 830am and end as late as 630pm. Weekends also must be worked on a rotational basis. Rotation among work locations is required based on operational needs. The locations for which employee rotate through include Brighton Center for Specialty Care, East Ann Arbor Health Center, Taubman Center, Rogel Cancer Center, and Kellogg Eye Center.
