Job Summary

The Director of Data Center and Cloud Architecture is responsible for the strategic design, governance, and evolution of Michigan Medicine's data center and cloud environments. This role provides architectural leadership for on-premise data center infrastructure and private / public cloud platforms , ensuring the scalability, security, and efficiency of IT systems supporting clinical, research, and administrative functions.

Reporting to senior IT leadership, the Director leads a team of architects focused on developing and implementing high-performance, resilient, and cost-effective infrastructure solutions . This includes oversight of compute, storage, networking, virtualization, and container platforms (VMware, OpenShift), as well as cloud-native architectures . The Director plays a critical role in driving the institution's hybrid cloud strategy , ensuring seamless integration between traditional data center operations and cloud-based workloads.

This position requires deep expertise in enterprise IT architecture, cloud transformation, and infrastructure modernization , with a strong ability to collaborate across IT, security, operations, and business units. The Director will lead efforts to optimize existing infrastructure , establish governance frameworks, and enable a secure and strategic transition to cloud-based services while ensuring the reliability of on-premise systems.

The Cloud Center of Excellence (CcoE) at Michigan Medicine is a strategic division dedicated to driving cloud adoption, governance, and operational excellence across the organization. The CcoE serves as the central hub for cloud expertise, ensuring the secure, efficient, and scalable use of cloud technologies to support clinical, research, and administrative initiatives.

With a focus on innovation, best practices, and compliance, the CcoE is responsible for establishing cloud strategies, architecture standards, and operational frameworks that align with the institution's mission. The division collaborates closely with IT, security, and business stakeholders to optimize cloud environments, enabling high-performance computing, data analytics, and mission-critical applications including the management and optimization of Epic EHR and Sectra PACS in the public cloud.

By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, automation, and cloud-native solutions, the CcoE ensures that Michigan Medicine remains at the forefront of digital transformation, delivering reliable, cost-effective, and cutting-edge cloud services that enhance patient care, research advancements, and operational efficiencies.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Management :

  • Lead and manage a team of cloud architects, providing direction, guidance, and mentorship to foster their professional growth and development.
  • Define team objectives, establish performance metrics, and conduct regular performance evaluations to ensure the team's success and alignment with organizational goals.

Data Center Architecture Strategy :

  • Develop and implement a strategic roadmap for data center architecture initiatives within the traditional data center environment, aligning with organizational objectives and industry best practices.
  • Define architecture standards, frameworks, and methodologies to guide the design and implementation of cloud solutions across the organization
  • Cloud Architecture Strategy :

  • Develop and implement a strategic roadmap for cloud architecture initiatives within the CCoE, aligning with organizational objectives and industry best practices.
  • Define architecture standards, frameworks, and methodologies to guide the design and implementation of cloud solutions across the organization.
  • Solution Design and Delivery :

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into scalable and resilient cloud architecture designs.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight throughout the solution development lifecycle, ensuring adherence to architectural standards and best practices.
  • Technical Governance and Quality Assurance :

  • Establish and enforce technical governance processes to maintain consistency, reliability, and security across cloud architectures and solutions.
  • Conduct regular architecture reviews and audits to assess compliance with architectural standards and identify areas for improvement.
  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Management :

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT, security, operations, and business units, to ensure alignment of cloud architecture initiatives with organizational objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, providing transparent communication and effective decision-making support.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 7 to 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in the operation and management of IT services.
  • Strong leadership, communications and technology management skills and experience.
  • Proven experience in cloud architecture and design, with at least 8 years of experience in cloud computing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams in a dynamic environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, including proficiency in cloud-native services and technologies.
  • Strong understanding of architectural principles, patterns, and best practices for designing scalable, resilient, and secure data center infrastructure and cloud solutions.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred.
