Position Description

The Department of Philosophy and Religion is committed to research and teaching that defines the University of Mississippi as an institution devoted to higher education and liberal education. Our faculty are experts in core sub-disciplines of our respective fields, and our department aims to produce research that is of a quantity and quality worthy of the University of Mississippi’s R1 status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Our programs aim to produce students who not only understand the concepts and methods relevant to the respective disciplines of philosophy and religion, but who excel in critical and analytical thinking, writing and verbal communication, ethical deliberation, and who can readily engage in civil and productive dialogue with their peers.

The Department of Philosophy and Religion invites applicants for an Instructional Assistant Professor beginning August 2025. A successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in philosophy or in religious studies in hand by August 2024. This position will be 50% teaching (five classes per year) and 50% administrative service. Service responsibilities will include maintaining the Department’s electronic media, overseeing the Department’s student support and engagement activities, and assisting the chair with a number of Departmental administrative processes.

The key responsibilities of this role are to teach, maintain the Department’s electronic media, oversee the Department’s student support and engagement activities, and assist the chair with a number of Departmental administrative processes.

In addition to teaching, here are examples of the work that will be performed.

Maintaining Electronic Media

  • maintaining the Philosophy and Religion Website
  • maintaining Philosophy and Religion social media accounts
  • maintaining the Mississippi Philosophical Association Website

Student Engagement And Support

  • Working with Liberal Arts Studies Services to advise all philosophy majors (with and without the Religious Studies emphasis) about meeting requirements for graduation
  • Handling new student and potential student "Visit Days"
  • Handling the annual "Mississippi Day" event
  • Overseeing Student Awards (Lawhead, Blass, Taylor medal, Ambassadors, Phil-Rel Hall of Fame)
  • Helping to recruit talented students to the major
  • Helping add/drop students from class rolls during the first two weeks of each semester
  • Visiting all 100-level Philosophy & Religion classes to advertise the major and upcoming classes during advising period

Administrative Support

  • Helping with course schedule planning
  • Helping with graduate student application materials
  • Collecting data about Philosophy & Religion for various administrative reports

Assignment Type: Non-Tenure Track

Minimum Qualifications

A successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in philosophy or in religious studies in hand by August 2025.
