Job Description

The Counseling Program in the Department of Education Sciences and Professional Programs at the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL) is continuously seeking qualified candidates for adjunct faculty to teach graduate courses in Counseling. The Counseling Program at UMSL offers CACREP-accredited master's degrees in school counseling and clinical mental health counseling as well as a CACREP-accredited PhD program in counselor education.

Positions vary by semester. Courses may include Psychopathology and Diagnosis; Foundations for Multicultural Counseling; Assessment in Counseling; Career Counseling and Development; Introduction to Systems in Counseling; Group Procedures in Counseling; Play Therapy; Introduction to Addiction Counseling; Counseling for Loss, Crisis, and Trauma; Internship; and more.

Adjunct instructors are needed to teach evening courses (typically 5:30-8:10pm) on UMSL's campus. A few courses (i.e., Assessment in Counseling, Career Counseling and Development, Social Class, and Poverty in Counseling) are taught in asynchronous online formats. Applicants should indicate their availability for in person or online teaching in their materials.

Adjuncts are appointed for summer (mid-May to early August), fall (mid-August to mid-December), and spring (mid-January to mid-May) semesters. Appointments are for each semester as needed and are term, non-benefit, non-tenure-accruing positions, with possibility for renewal. Candidate materials will be kept on file as program teaching needs change each term.

Major Responsibilities:
Teach courses that adhere to CACREP accreditation standards. Collaborate with department faculty.

Qualifications
  • An earned graduate degree in counseling (a doctorate in Counselor Education is preferred)
  • Counseling experience working with diverse clients and communities
  • Evidence of counselor professional identity (such as licensure, certification, credentials, or organizational memberships)
  • Evidence of teaching experience (preferably at the college level)
  • Demonstrated communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
