Job Description


The College of Veterinary Medicine at MU is on a mission to educate and train outstanding clinicians and scientists, generate new knowledge, engage stakeholders, and foster economic growth, all of which promote and protect the health and welfare of animals and people. Simply put, our mission is to Teach, Heal, Discover, and Serve.

Veterinarians throughout the Midwest refer animal clients to the Veterinary Health Center for specialized diagnoses and treatment. With sophisticated therapeutic equipment that includes an underwater treadmill, advanced imaging techniques, and groundbreaking equine lameness diagnostic equipment, we are a center for animal healthcare.

The Animal Care Workers of the Equine Hospital provide critical support service and care of the Veterinary Health Centers patients. Animal Care Workers ensure the health and safety of our patients by providing basic husbandry functions throughout the hospital.

Primary responsibilities for this position may include:

  • Responsible for providing basic husbandry for equine patients that may enter the hospital (feeding, watering, cleaning pens and stalls, etc.).
  • Must ensure that all pens, stalls, treatment areas, and connecting corridors are adequately cleaned and disinfected so that biosecurity integrity can be maintained.
  • Ensure that all rail work, catches and hinges on pens, stalls and treatment areas are cleaned and maintained on a continual basis.
  • Position may include duties in the food animal clinic caring for cattle, pigs, sheep, llamas, etc. that enter the hospital.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Shift


This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position. Standard position hours are Monday - Friday. Shift expected to start at 7a or 7:30a. Schedule and hours will be finalized once a candidate is selected for hire.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read and write.
  • One to two years of experience with caring for horses and/or livestock.
  • Ability on a daily basis to:
    • Lift items weighing up to 70 lbs.
    • Grasp handles of shovels for scooping and brooms and mops for cleaning
    • Climb on railings
    • Observe animal behavior
    • Work around dust, chemicals, animal waste and water

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with or handling Equines.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with operating forklifts, trucks and other equipment.

Anticipated Hiring Range


Salary Range: $15.00 per hour
GGS Grade: B
