General Description
Teach courses as assigned by the UM 101 Committee. The Adjunct Instructor for UM 101 – First-Year Seminar serves as an official representative of the University, promoting a positive first-impression by adopting and demonstrating a collegial, customer-service approach to students, parents, faculty, staff and other members of the University community.
Essential Job Duties
Instructor Responsibilities:
1. Course training during Spring and/or Summer semesters (Training Dates TBA)
2. Teach three-credit hour UM 101 section during Fall and/or Spring semesters
3. Follow syllabus and plan weekly course lectures, discussions, and activities using materials provided by UM 101 Coordinator
4. Utilize provided rubric and provide further directions for the required semester assignments
5. Weekly communication with UM 101 students regarding course progress, transition to college, and student needs
6. Grade semester assignments
Course Description: 3 credit hours – UM 101 is required of all first-year students and transfer students who have earned 24 credit hours or less and who haven’t taken an equivalent First-Year Seminar at the institution from which they are transferring.
UM 101 is designed to be an extended orientation to the University of Montevallo and an introduction to a liberal arts education. This course will help students find and utilize campus resources, develop foundational academic skills, engage in critical and creative reasoning, practice written and oral communication skills, and identify the essential values of the liberal arts experience by relating them to their personal interests, academic disciplines, and career opportunities. The grade for UM 101 is reported as A, B, C, or NC (no credit).
Meeting Time: Three-credit hour course which meets two or three days per week for 2.5 hours on average to meet required seat time.
