General Description

The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of skilled landscaping and grounds maintenance duties, including operating a variety of equipment commonly associated with the care and maintenance of grounds and landscape. Essential Job Duties 1. Mow grass, mulch and remove leaves, clean streets, walks and parking lots, fertilize turf, and make chemical applications for turf and ornamental plants.

2. Operate dump trucks, backhoes, front loaders, leaf vacuums, farm tractors, sprayers, rotary and reel mowers, man lifts, bucket trucks and other special equipment as required. Make minor repairs to equipment as needed.

3. Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools; push mowers, string trimmers, edgers, blowers, sprayers, shears, high-pressure washers, etc.

4. Use ladders when required in work assignments.

5. Supervise student or temporary employees during a portion of the employee’s work time; may assign tasks to a helper.

6. Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.

7. Apply herbicide and pesticide chemicals to grounds, walks / streets, trees, shrubs, and lawns to control plant diseases, weeds and insects.

8. Routinely remove dirt, leaves and other debris from storm drain inlets and catch basins.

9. Attend safety meetings and other related meetings.

10. Take classes as required in landscape maintenance methods and techniques, new products, First Aid, CPR, and working relationships.

11. Call in work orders and completes work orders as assigned.

12. Assist with inventory control and security.

13. Safely operate all vehicles and other job related equipment.

14. Support and enforce all policies, university and governmental such as ADEM, university health and safety regulations and guidelines, etc.

15. Report and respond to emergency calls for grounds maintenance assistance.

16. Safely disposes of hazardous materials commonly used in the performance job duties.

Ability to work on-call and before / after normal work hours as requested. Education and Experience The educational requirement for this position is : High school diploma / GED.

This position requires : One (1) year of grounds maintenance experience (in a school setting preferred), special equipment operator experience preferred.

    This position has the following special vision requirements :

  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more).
  • Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).
  • Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down or to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point).
  • Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships).
  • Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
