General Responsibilities
The position of Director for Campus Safety is responsible for full oversight and management of all aspects of the Department for Campus Safety. Campus Safety is within the Division of Operations and the position reports to the VP and AVP for Operations. As an “essential” employee, this position must remain or report for work during partial or full day closings of the site due to hazardous or other emergency conditions as well as inclement weather as needed.
This leadership role will ensure the protection of the campus community including students, faculty, staff, SCNY, and visitors, as well as university assets and facilities. The Director of Security will develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive security policies, procedures, and programs that align with the university’s mission and values.
Work Duties
- Develop and implement Campus Safety policies, emergency response plans, parking policies, and risk management strategies to ensure a safe and secure campus environment.
- Lead and manage the Campus Safety team, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation of staff.
- Oversee campus surveillance systems, access control measures, and emergency communication platforms.
- Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies and emergency services to coordinate responses to incidents and large-scale events.
- Conduct regular security audits and risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and recommend improvements. This includes scheduling / conducting necessary fire drills and shelter-in-place drills.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs and workshops for students, faculty, and staff.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local safety regulations and university policies, including Clery Act reporting requirements.
- Act as the primary point of contact during campus emergencies and crises, leading the incident response and recovery efforts along with appropriate constituents in adjacent departments.
- Prepare and present regular reports on campus security operations, incidents, and improvement initiatives to senior leadership.
- Foster a culture of safety awareness and preparedness throughout the University community. Must abide by all University policies and procedures.
