Brief Summary of Job Description
The Mental health practitioner works as a mental health counselor for the UNK student population. This position is a core member of a collaborative care team, including a patient’s on-campus medical provider and a psychiatric provider. This position will work in an integrative team environment and is responsible for supporting and coordinating the mental and physical health care of students by conducting screenings, assessments and brief evidenced-based interventions. The position will also assist in all areas of Counseling Center functions.

Job Duties
  • Support the mental and physical health care of patients on an assigned patient caseload.
  • Closely coordinate care with the patient’s medical provider and, when appropriate, other mental health providers.
  • Screen and assess patients for common mental health and substance abuse disorders.
  • Facilitate patient engagement and follow-up care.
  • Participate in weekly caseload consultations with integrative team and track patients in a patient registry.
  • Systematically track treatment response and monitor patients (in person, virtual or by telephone) for changes in clinical symptoms and treatment side effects.
  • Provide brief behavioral interventions using evidence-based techniques such as behavioral activation, problem solving therapy, motivational interviewing, and CBT.
  • Provide long term therapy as needed.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Psychology, Social Work or related field in mental health. Licensed as a Mental Health Practitioner in the State of Nebraska. Requires specialized knowledge of college mental health needs and trends in addition to concepts related to integrated medicine. Possesses the credentials to provide mental health counseling and supervision. Experience in crisis management and diagnostic skills. Knowledge of counseling or social work best practices and standards of practice as governed by the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics or National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Ability to maintain collaborative relationships with primary care staff, students, faculty, and UNK staff. Requires the ability to maintain positive relationships within the department and across campus. Requires effective communication skills. Requires the ability to carry out job functions as to align with the overall mission and goals of the Counseling Center.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in college mental health. Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner.

Physical Demands

Schedule
M-F 19 hours per week; Academic year; flexibility to work evening and or weekend hours
