Essential Functions

The Digital Archivist leads initiatives to preserve and provide access to born-digital and digitized archival collections. Leads digital initiatives for Archives and Special Collections by providing a full range of management, preservation, access, and sustainability services for digital archives. Supervises digitization. Contributes to and supports library services through the investigation, implementation, and enhancement of tools and services that assist with research, creativity, scholarship, and engagement. Additionally, the Digital Archivist maintains team-based working relationships with colleagues in the department, library, and the university in addition to fulfilling requirements of faculty status in areas of contributions to librarianship, scholarly activities, and service.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Digital Collections :

  • Manages and leads departmental efforts on digital preservation throughout the digital asset lifecycle.
  • Manages and leads the implementation, management, and assessment of repository tools for digital collections, which currently include JSTOR, Omeka, OHMS, and other tools and platforms..
  • Manages and leads digitization production and workflows while collaborating with colleagues to set and maintain priorities.
  • Monitors developments in digital preservation, access, and related initiatives and communicates their implications to library stakeholders.
  • Advises on local best practices and institutional policy issues related to digital preservation and collections such as accessibility, sustainability, copyright fair use, and related matters.
  • Collaborates with library colleagues on research data services team, including serving as a resource for students and faculty.

Outreach Services :

  • Conducts and contributes to departmental and library outreach when needed, such as staffing department reference, participating in events, and making relevant presentations.
  • May advise and train community members on digitization, metadata creation, and preservation planning as part of department community engagement activities.
  • Acts as liaison to university and community partners as well as vendors when appropriate.
  • Supervision and Coordination :

  • Leads and directs work of library employees participating in digitization of collections.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises library staff, student employees, and interns as needed.
  • FACULTY RANK : Professional librarians have academic status and faculty rank and are subject to library and university guidelines and criteria for reappointment, promotion, and tenure.

    Work Schedule

    Monday - Friday 8 : 00 AM - 5 : 00 PM. Hours may vary on unit needs

    Additional Duties

    Other Job Responsibilities :

  • Project planning and management including the evaluation of the feasibility of proposed projects and initiatives within the local environment.
  • Contributes to a continuous process of assessment by participating in the collection and analysis of relevant data.
  • Participates in department and library planning.
  • Develops and documents processes and procedures; periodically reviews and revises processes and procedures as needed.
  • Accepts and implements other duties as assigned.
  • Faculty Responsibilities :

  • Serves on library and / or university committees.
  • Participates in cross-departmental projects.
  • Participates in professional activities, professional development, and scholarly research and publication activities as outlined in the "Guidelines on Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Recommendations for Faculty Members of the University Library".
  • Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited MLS degree or Master's degree in Archival Studies or related field.
  • Graduate course work or commensurate training in archives.
  • Demonstrated experience with the arrangement and description of multi-format archival collections.
  • Demonstrated experience working with digital archives (born digital or digitized assets).
  • Demonstrated experience with platforms for managing and / or accessing digital objects and collections.
  • Knowledge of standard and best practices related to digital archives.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards related to digitization and digital preservation.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and complete projects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with colleagues in the department, library, and the university.
