Position Summary

The University of Nebraska at Omaha Athletic Department is seeking a dynamic, passionate, and skilled Associate Athletic Director of Clinical and Performance Psychology to provide mental health support and performance coaching to our student-athletes, helping athletes achieve their full potential both on and off their playing surface. This leadership position offers a unique opportunity to work fully embedded in athletics, making a direct impact on the well-being and performance of our athletes. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering team and individual sports performance consultations as well as integrated psychological services to student-athletes including, but not limited to, mental health psychology services, drug and alcohol counseling, diagnostic assessments, crisis intervention and therapeutic treatment for Omaha Athletics' student-athletes. This position will also serve on the Sports Performance Leadership Team as part of the multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.

As part of an established and highly utilized clinic, the Associate Athletic Director will benefit from a high level of organizational support, including strong collaboration with athletic administration, coaches, medical staff, and campus / community mental health resources. While providing consultation for coaches, athletic department staff, and other constituents, this position will develop and cultivate preventative and educational presentations on sports-psychology, with an emphasis on evidence-based practices for overall student-athlete health and wellbeing. This position will report to the Sr. Associate Athletic Director of Performance / Athletic Healthcare Administrator.

Provide individual counseling and mental health assessments to student-athletes, addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, stress management, and personal challenges.

Duties :

Develop and implement mental performance strategies to optimize athletic performance, including goal setting, focus, visualization, leadership, communication, team building and resilience training.

Duties :

Work closely with coaches, athletic trainers, sport nutritionist, and other staff to promote mental well-being and mental performance across all sports. This position serves as a liaison between campus CAPS and Athletics. This position will also support one other athlete mental health counselor.

Duties :

Lead workshops and seminars for student-athletes, coaches, and staff to foster a positive, mentally resilient athletic culture. Also provide outreach to campus community, specifically UNO Athletic Department on education and prevention programming related to clinical psychological issues (e.g. Campus-wide suicide prevention training, holistic wellness, faculty training on working with students in distress, understanding mental health issues, LGBTQ Ally Training, & other prevention programs) to student-athletes, coaches, athletic department staff, and other constituents. Contribute to student-athlete NCAA mandated educational programming efforts, including Mav360.

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required Education

Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) or Master's degree (M.A.) in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Sport Psychology, or related field.

Required Experience

Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience, including work with athletes in both mental health and performance contexts. Experience working with collegiate athletes is highly desirable.

Required License / Certification

Licensed or eligible for licensure as a psychologist in the state of Nebraska.

Required Additional Qualifications :

Preferred Education

APA-approved doctoral program and APA-accredited doctoral internship.

Credentialed or eligible for the Certified Mental performance Consultation Certificate

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in working within a university or collegiate athletics / counseling department.
  • CMPC is a plus, not required.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations regarding mental health and performance coaching.
  • Preferred License / Certification

    Preferred Additional Qualifications :

  • Strong background in both mental health counseling and mental performance coaching.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based therapeutic interventions for common mental health issues in athletes.
  • Experience in crisis intervention and managing mental health emergencies in high-pressure environments.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and communicate effectively with student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
