Job Description
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, invites applications for Career Development Advisor, William S. Boyd School of Law [R0146684].
ROLE of the POSITION
The Career Development Advisor provides comprehensive job search services to students and alumni of the William S. Boyd School of Law. The Advisor is a generalist and provides individual career counseling to students and alumni, develops Career Development Office (CDO) resource materials, reviews resumes and cover letters, keeps current on job trends and avenues of job search techniques, assists with employment outcomes reporting, and creates and executes programming designed to educate students about legal employment opportunities.
Provide individual career counseling to students and alumni
  • Review students' and alumni’s resumes and cover letters and provide feedback.
  • Review resumes for externship, internship, and post-graduate employment applications.
  • Counsel students and alumni on job search strategies.
  • Field student/alum inquiries, with respect to careers in the private and public sector, but particularly related to post-graduate judicial clerkship positions in Nevada's state trial courts.
Manage and coordinate judicial placements for JD students and alumni
  • Provide outreach to members of the judiciary and staff, particularly in state courts, to gauge needs and ensure appropriate placements.
  • Review resumes, conduct mock interviews, and otherwise counsel JD students and alumni in applying for judicial positions.
  • Work with the law school externship director to develop judicial internship and externship opportunities and identify students for those opportunities.
  • Assist with securing and advertising judicial internships, externships, and clerkship opportunities.
Develop and maintain programming and resources for JD students
  • Develop and conduct workshops for students.
  • In conjunction with staff, coordinate CDO programs.
  • Establish and maintain a network of private and public employees to assist students and alumni in job search strategies.
Employment outcomes reporting
  • Assist with the collection and analysis of employment data from graduates and report to NALP, ABA, and US News.
  • Maintain contact with recent graduates to assist them with post-graduate job searches and collect up-to-date contact.
  • and employment information collaborating with the BSL registrar’s office on data collection.
  • Assist with the preparation of statistical and other reports for internal and external constituencies.
  • Frequently update internal files with alumni’s contact information.
Keep current on job trends, avenues of enhancing job search techniques, etc.
Miscellaneous and other duties related to the position.
PROFILE of the COLLEGE
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas William S. Boyd School of Law, a state-supported law school, is the only law school in Nevada. The Law School offers day and evening JD programs to nearly 400 students, as well as an LL.M in Gaming Law and Regulation. The Law School is recognized nationally for its lawyering process program (ranked #1 in the country), the Saltman Center for Dispute Resolution, and its clinical programs. The Law School is a diverse community of faculty, students, and staff who work together, collegially, and respectfully, to maximize the potential of students and to fulfill the mission and aspirations of the Law School.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required qualifications:
KNOWLEDGE
  • This position requires a Master’s or Juris Doctor degree from an accredited university/college.
  • Candidates with demonstrated experience in a legal setting, career services, experiential education, or other experience interacting with college students and employers are highly desirable.
SKILLS
  • Ability to work independently, to effectively communicate with students and alumni, and to accurately track employment trends and outcomes.
  • Knowledge of legal resume and cover letter format, legal processes, inner workings of public and private sector employment opportunities, in-state job search techniques and methods and procedures for seeking professional legal employment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail is required as well as strong writing, proofreading, and editing skills.
  • Basic computer skill, including knowledge of Symplicity. Word, Excel and experience with databases and web-based programs.
ABILITIES
  • The ideal candidate will possess a flexible and positive attitude, team-player mentality, compassion, and passion for helping law students reach their professional goals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE
  • Juris Doctor degree.
  • Judicial clerkship experience.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in law school administration and/or law school career advising
SKILLS
  • Experience working with 12Twenty or a similar law school career services employment program.
ABILITIES
  • Prior experience in law school administration and/or law school career advising is preferred but not required.

Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. This position is contingent upon funding.
