• Perform all essential hazardous / universal waste management functions including but not limited to : collecting, inventorying, classifying, bulking, segregating, labeling, preparing and coordinating hazardous and universal waste for shipment.
• Conduct regular inspections of hazardous materials storage and handling areas, prepare inspection reports, and implement corrective actions to address deficiencies.
• Maintain records of all hazardous materials management activities, including inspection reports, manifests, land disposal restrictions, hazardous waste determinations, hazardous waste profiles, etc.
• Provide guidance and training to faculty, staff, and researchers on proper hazardous waste generation and management.
• Respond to hazardous materials spills and incidents.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the safe, compliant, and efficient management of hazardous materials.This position also supports other EMLS services including hazardous materials shipping, chemical safety training, laboratory inspections, and backup committee attendance. Additionally, it is also responsible for various activities that arise, not described above, which generally fall in the category of other hazardous materials safety duties. The Hazardous Materials Specialist is "on-call" to respond to campus incidents outside of normal business hours. Must be able to obtain 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response and Hazardous Material Shipping certifications within 90 days of employment.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThis position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 1-3 years experience; OR an Associate degree and 4 years' experience; OR a high school diploma or GED and 6-8 years' experience.
