If you need assistance or have questions regarding the application process, please contact Human Resources at (702) 895-3504 or unlvjobs@unlv.edu.Job DescriptionThe University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Hazardous Materials Specialist, Risk Management Services [R0145903]ROLE of the POSITIONThe Hazardous Materials Specialist provides support to the Environmental Management and Lab Safety (EMLS) Unit in the management of hazardous materials and waste generated across all UNLV locations.Key responsibilities include :
  • Perform all essential hazardous / universal waste management functions including but not limited to : collecting, inventorying, classifying, bulking, segregating, labeling, preparing and coordinating hazardous and universal waste for shipment.
  • Conduct regular inspections of hazardous materials storage and handling areas, prepare inspection reports, and implement corrective actions to address deficiencies.
  • Maintain records of all hazardous materials management activities, including inspection reports, manifests, land disposal restrictions, hazardous waste determinations, hazardous waste profiles, etc.
  • Provide guidance and training to faculty, staff, and researchers on proper hazardous waste generation and management.
  • Respond to hazardous materials spills and incidents.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the safe, compliant, and efficient management of hazardous materials.This position also supports other EMLS services including hazardous materials shipping, chemical safety training, laboratory inspections, and backup committee attendance. Additionally, it is also responsible for various activities that arise, not described above, which generally fall in the category of other hazardous materials safety duties. The Hazardous Materials Specialist is "on-call" to respond to campus incidents outside of normal business hours. Must be able to obtain 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response and Hazardous Material Shipping certifications within 90 days of employment.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSThis position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 1-3 years experience; OR an Associate degree and 4 years' experience; OR a high school diploma or GED and 6-8 years' experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's Degree and 3-5 years experience
