Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for an Assistant Director, Utilities Services or a Director, Utilities Services in the Facilities Services Department. The Assistant Director, Utilities Services is responsible for managing the daily operations of mechanical and electrical systems, overseeing maintenance and repairs, providing technical leadership, resolving operational issues, and contributing to strategic planning and long-term objectives to optimize performance, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
In addition to the Assistant Director, Utilities Services responsibilities, the Director, Utilities Services has responsibilities at the division level assisting the Senior Director with planning, managing and implementing special projects; providing guidance and approvals; assisting with daily operations, personnel matters, and budget development; representing Facilities Maintenance Services in committees and community meetings; and identifying workforce development opportunities.
This position reports to the Senior Director of Facilities Maintenance Services.
Assistant Director, Utilities Services
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide direction, technical assistance, assign work, and supervise staff
  • Oversee mechanical and electrical system preventative maintenance and repairs
  • Develop and oversee budgets
  • Identify and plan deferred maintenance projects
  • Complete ongoing analysis of complex maintenance project status
  • Create, monitor, and maintain project performance metrics
  • Establish a reporting process that provides for detailed project-level reporting to be reviewed with the Senior Director and management team
  • Establish procedures to monitor quality, customer satisfaction, and efficiency
  • Develop maintenance execution processes to improve performance
  • Assist with campus energy management
  • Plan, manage, and implement special projects, as assigned
  • Provide engineering knowledge and judgement
  • Triage problems and expedite resolution of interruptions to work
  • Drive a focus on goal achievement throughout business decision-making
  • Meet regularly with the management team to review key project status and ensure any risks are identified and mitigated
  • Provide input on strategic plans as a member of the management team
  • Contribute to the goal development process
  • Other duties as assigned
Director, Utilities Services
In addition to the above, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist Senior Director with daily operational activities, personnel issues, budget development, planning and management, as requested
  • Exercise full authority to complete approvals and provide guidance including serving as signature authority in the absence of the Senior Director
  • Represent Facilities Maintenance Services with critical analysis and participation on committees, boards, and in community meetings
  • Identify workforce development opportunities and bring them to the attention of the Senior Director
Required Qualifications *Candidates will be hired at the level comparable to their experience, knowledge, skills and abilities**
Assistant Director, Utilities Services
Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years of related professional work experience; OR
Master’s degree and three (3) years of related professional work experience
Related Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or related field from a regionally accredited institution. Progressively responsible managerial experience in facilities maintenance, operations, or related field to include supervision.
A valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. OSHA 30-hour card within one year of employment.
Director, Utilities Services
Bachelor’s Degree and six (6) years of related professional work experience; OR
Master’s degree and four (4) years of related professional work experience
Related Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, or related field from a regionally accredited institution. Progressively responsible managerial experience in facilities maintenance, operations, or related field to include supervision.
A valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. OSHA 30-hour card within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in mechanical engineering
  • Professional Engineer certification
  • Experience with district heating and cooling systems
Physical Demands
This position requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling; exerting 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Schedule and Travel
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs. This position may be able to elect an alternative work schedule. Occasional travel may be required.
This position is designated as Essential Personnel. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
