Job Description The Director of Data Science is an open rank faculty position at the University of Nevada, Reno – School of Medicine will lead a newly established office focused on clinical informatics and data science. This role encompasses developing and implementing strategies to leverage the school’s data assets effectively. The Director will spearhead the creation of an education and research program aimed at engaging students, faculty, and the community in advancing the school's mission. This includes fostering innovative teaching methodologies, conducting groundbreaking research, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration within the university and with external partners in the healthcare industry. Responsibilities will include curriculum development, mentorship of graduate students and junior faculty, and active participation in service activities at departmental, university, and professional levels. The Director will also be instrumental in securing research funding and publishing significant research findings in esteemed academic journals. With a commitment to excellence in teaching, the Director will design and deliver courses in health informatics, ensuring they reflect the latest advancements in the field. Overall, this position requires a strategic leader with a PhD in Health Informatics or a similar field, exemplary pedagogical skills, and a dedication to fostering a thriving academic and research environment. The Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of data science education and translational clinical research at the University of Nevada, Reno – School of Medicine. Key Responsibilities: Systems-development: Coordinate with key stakeholders to provide access to EMR, payer and other clinical datasets and develop the infrastructure for research support for clinicians and students Teaching: Develop and deliver educational content in health informatics for medical students, clinicians, researchers and other health care learners to teach the fundamentals of health informatics. Research: Conduct original research in health informatics and data science. Collaborate with clinicians and health learners, publish findings in academic journals, and secure research funding. Mentorship: Supervise and mentor graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty members in data science Curriculum Development: Design and update curricula to reflect the latest advancements in health data science. Service: Participate in departmental, university, and professional service activities, such as serving on committees and reviewing academic journals. Collaboration: Work with other departments, healthcare organizations, and industry partners to advance the field of health informatics. Qualifications Advanced Degree: PhD in Health Informatics or similar field Skills: Advanced Degree: PhD in Health Informatics or similar field Teaching Excellence: Strong pedagogical skills and a commitment to student learning and success with professional students with varying levels of research literacy Research Expertise: Proven track record of research publications and grant funding. Experience in interdisciplinary translational research experience and Team Science Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for teaching, research, and collaboration. Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of health information systems, data analytics, and informatics tools. Leadership: Experience leading strategy and operations of a unit. Ability to lead research projects, mentor students, and contribute to academic administration.
