Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Donor Relations Writer I/Writer II.The Donor Relations department is responsible for supporting the development and fundraising campaign efforts of the University. The Writer position supports the University's philanthropic goals by creating compelling communications to aid in the cultivation, education, solicitation and stewardship of donors.The position is available as a Writer I or Writer II with placement dependent on level of knowledge, skills, ability and relevant experience.

The Writer position reports to the Director and develops story ideas, fresh and innovative copy and information for correspondence and reports, writes donor acknowledgements, stories and articles about donors and gifts, conducts interviews and research pertinent to writing assignments, assists with reporting to donors and supports development activities. The position works closely with staff and administrators to produce stewardship and development materials, donor correspondence, agreements and reports; to maintain website, and to create and disseminate electronic newsletters and social media on established schedule, with the complexity of assignments and duties dependent on position level.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Exemplary written communications skills such as preparing correspondence, stories, articles, publications and reports, including generating content, proofing and copy editing

  • Ability to produce high volume of accurate work product, set and achieve goals, follow procedures and work within deadlines

  • Interpersonal, public relations and customer service skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a large and diverse combination of coworkers, students, volunteers, administrators, alumni and donors

  • Attention to detail

  • High level of initiative, creativity and collaboration

  • Strong organizational skills

Required Qualifications

Writer I - Bachelor's Degree and one (1) year of related comparable professional experience or a Master's Degree and no experience.

Writer II - Master's Degree and one (1) year of related comparable professional experience OR a Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of related comparable professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • HTML or experience in email building

  • Photo editing

  • Experience writing for various audiences and changing tone and style accordingly

  • Project management

Compensation Grade

Writer I - Compensation Grade A

The typical salary range for this position is: $42,000-$52,000

Writer II - Compensation Grade B

The typical salary range for this position is $52,000-$65,000

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees

The University is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Donor Relations is a comprehensive effort to ensure that donors experience high-quality interactions with the University that foster long-term engagement and investment. The department supports the division-wide goals of University Advancement, and is responsible for donor correspondence and acknowledgements, endowment and scholarship reporting, gift agreements, giving website ( ) and donor recognition, for Nevada Silver & Blue magazine, social media and e-newsletters.
