The Research and Teaching Librarian provides research support, library instruction, collection development, and subject expertise to the UNE community.

Responsibilities

  • Build and sustain a program of excellent, equitable teaching and learning, centered on undergraduate research, information literacy, and student learning outcomes, with a focus on addressing barriers that limit access to library services, collections, programs, and spaces. Collaborate with faculty to assess student success.
  • Partner with faculty to assess student needs and integrate library research into curricula.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate information literacy instruction for students.
  • Utilize current and emerging technologies to support and enhance teaching, research experiences, and user access to library resources.
  • Develop educational tools, such as instructional documents, video tutorials, learning modules, and websites, to support research and teaching.
  • Maintain broad subject knowledge in fields such as medicine, health sciences, life and environmental sciences, arts and humanities, and social sciences.
  • Maintain in-depth subject knowledge in one or more designated subject areas.
  • Address the information needs of diverse users, including conducting interviews, needs assessments, and interpreting information requests. Develop strategies to answer requests directly or teach users the necessary skills to do so independently.
  • Skilled in web-based searching across numerous databases and online resources. Maintain expert knowledge of the features of these databases and resources.
  • Stay familiar with UNE Libraries’ collections and assist in their development and evaluation, including making budget recommendations based on cost-per-use data.
  • Collect and manage data related to user instruction and other assessments.
  • Use data for assessment and reporting purposes.
  • Serve as a collection development selector and subject specialist in designated fields.
  • Identify, evaluate, and select new materials and services for the collection.
  • Provide support and collaborate on research projects, publications, data management, and other research needs.
  • Form and cultivate collaborative relationships with campus units and programs that support academic preparedness and student success, such as the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, the Student Academic Success Center, the First-Year Experience office, the Office of Intercultural Engagement, and university-wide committees.
  • Adapt to cyclical periods of intense work activity, prioritize, and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Assist with general library operations and be cross-trained in specific areas.
  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with other library staff through functional and cross-functional teams, sharing leadership responsibilities.
  • Work with UNE faculty, staff, and students to plan, coordinate, and evaluate services, exchange information, and resolve problems.
  • Stay current with new developments and best practices in academic librarianship through professional development activities.
  • Participate in campus-wide projects and represent the library on university committees.
  • Serve as the library liaison to designated units within the university.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, plus one or more years of relevant experience in research and teaching, or a combination of education and experience that provides comparable knowledge and skills.

  • A current and broad base of skills and technical knowledge related to reference and research in an academic library.
  • Experience with academic library information sources.
  • Proficiency in using technology to deliver information and perform outreach.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching, training, and assessment, with a focus on information literacy skills, or comparable experience in teaching and program planning.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise judgment in resolving or referring special or non-routine situations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-based management structure, initiate ideas, and share information to work productively with library staff.
  • Ability to work independently, plan, organize, prioritize, and complete projects by target dates.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a broad academic community.
  • A demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a high degree of computer literacy.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to cyclical periods of intense work activity, prioritize, and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Knowledge of the principles, organization, and philosophy of an academic library.
  • Willingness and ability to travel between campuses.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, as required.
