Assistant Professor Positionin Special Education Teacher Preparation
Starting in August 2025

The University of NewMexico, College of Education and Human Sciences, Department of SpecialEducation, invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor positionPreparation in the undergraduate Dual License program in the area of Special EducationTeacher Preparation, with experience and expertise in preK-12 special educationclassroom teaching. This new UNM main campus faculty member will work out ofthe UNM-Gallup branch campus to extend the teaching, research, and servicemission of the Special Education Department to the area of Gallup, New Mexicoand surrounding communities.

Responsibilities


The successfulcandidate will be expected to supervise students in field placements, advise students, and teach courses specific to the preparationof special educators to serve thediverse needs of students with disabilities in inclusive settings. The facultymember will collaborate with colleagues in the Special Education Department and the Dual License ProgramCoordinator to recruit and evaluate of potential cooperating teachers, placeteacher candidates infield sites,update program participants’ progress, and collaborate with our programpartners. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute todiversity through their teaching,advisement, and service. Successful candidates must be committed to workingwith broadly diverse student and community populations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Terminal degree in Special Education or a closely related field by August 15, 2025
2. Minimum three years’ experience teaching students with a wide range of special education needs

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Robust and current formal academic preparation in the education of pre- and in-service educators to work with preK-12 students from historically marginalized communities in inclusive settings.
2. Thorough formal preparation and current involvement in research activities, such that the successful candidate will be able to establish an agenda of active research relevant to the preparation of pre- and in-service educators to work with preK-12 students from historically marginalized communities in inclusive settings.
3. Extensive preK-12 teaching experience working with students with a wide range of special education needs from historically marginalized communities in inclusive settings.
4. Excellence or potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate licensure courses.
5. Potential for excellence in supervision of teacher candidates, including those from historically marginalized communities.
6. Evidence of successful collaborations, especially with historically marginalized communities.
7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
8. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
