Position Summary

The Accelerating Resilience Innovations in Drylands (ARID) Institute is actively hiring a Collaborative Engagement Research Scientist to support the Middle Rio Grande Endangered Species Collaborative Program (MRGESCP) and the UNM Metals Exposure and Toxicity Assessment on Tribal Lands in the Southwest (METALS) Superfund Research Program. This position will work closely with and report to the Principal Investigators for the MRGESCP and METALS.

The MRGESCP is a multi-party collaborative comprised of federal, state, local government agencies; Pueblos; municipal water utilities; an irrigation district; and environmental non-governmental organizations. UNM-ARID provides programmatic, administrative, and scientific support to the MRGESCP in order to fulfill its role of being a collaborative space for the signatory partners to collaborate and coordinate scientific and management activities related to the listed species of the Middle Rio Grande (MRG) and their habitat, the riparian bosque ecosystem. Job duties to support the MRGESCP includes facilitating committee meetings and workshops; ongoing coordination with MREGSCP signatory representatives and staff; co-planning and leading collaborative processes; providing administrative support in implementing MRGESCP activities and initiatives; drafting MRGESCP meeting minutes, documents, and reports; representing the MRGESCP at outreach events; and ensuring MRGESCP adherence to its biennial schedule, Long-Term Plan, By-Laws, and other governance and operating documents consistent with the MRGESCP mission and goals.

UNM METALS Superfund Research Center is dedicated to identify risks and remediation strategies from exposures to metal mixtures in waters and soils affected by uranium mining legacy on tribal communities in the Southwest. Job duties to support METALS will include leading efforts to engage communities and environmental health research and research that advances human health, especially among disproportionately impacted populations. The successful candidate will work with the Administrative Core to support science translation efforts and facilitate the integration of trainees in community engagement activities. The successful candidate will also support science communication efforts in coordination with researchers and partner communities at the Pueblo of Laguna and Navajo (Diné) Nation.

The successful candidate will travel to partner communities, attend relevant conferences, and present at different community and academic events.

This is a Term position with funding initially through 12/31/2025.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Proven track record with multi-stakeholder engagement, coalition building, and developing collaborative and stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Experience working with Tribal and Indigenous communities and governments.
  • Experience working with natural resource management and health agencies.
  • Exemplary communication skills, especially to non-scientific audiences. Familiarity with science communication principles.
  • Experience with developing and implementing community-engaged research.
  • Highly organized, with proven ability in project management and administration.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • High level of familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
